Slimy mold, gnat infestations and roaches all cited in July health inspections
The Star-Telegram keeps track of every health inspection report for Tarrant and Dallas counties. July held some notable citations.
Gnat infestations at a Pei Wei in Arlington, moldy black beans at a Richland Hills Chuy’s and slimy mold in a soda machine at Burritos Krayzi’s #2 in Hurst are just a glimpse into what health inspectors reported last month.
Here’s a complete roundup of the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in July.
Tarrant County
Tarrant County Public Health uses an inspection format that considers 100 as the highest possible score, with a score of 70 considered extremely poor. Restaurants scoring below 70 require a follow-up inspection.
Notable reports include moldy black beans at Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant located at 7344 Baker Blvd. in Richland Hills and larva that were found on rotten meat in Burritos Krayzi’s #2 at 821 W. Pipeline Road in Hurst.
Restaurants closed due to roach infestation include: Green Tea House at 645 Harwood Road in Bedford and Master Wok inside the North East Mall at 1101 Melbourne Road in Hurst. Both require a follow-up inspection to reopen.

Fort Worth
Fort Worth’s restaurant inspections function on a demerit system. Zero demerits is considered a perfect score. Restaurants with more than 30 demerits are required to fix the worst problems immediately and remedy the rest within 48 hours.
During July, Fort Worth restaurants had issues with roaches, rodent droppings, dead rodents and inadequate hot water or food storage temperatures.
Restaurants with more than 30 demerits include: Asian Star Buffet at 6920 Ridgmar Meadow Road, Tortilleria Super Sabrosa at 3251 Mansfield Highway, Los Juanitos at 3221 Mansfield Highway and Mi Tierra Carniceria at 6722 Camp Bowie Blvd.

Arlington
Arlington restaurants are scored on a 100-point system, with 100 being a perfect score. Restaurants and other places that serve food that score 75 or less require a follow-up inspection, and a score of 70 is considered extremely poor.
Gnats, mold, roaches and inadequate food storage and water temperatures were cited in Arlington’s July health inspection reports.
Restaurants that scored 75 and less include: Saltgrass Steak House at 1051 W. Interstate 20 Highway, First Chinese BBQ at 2214 S. Collins St., ABC Seafood Restaurant at 2420 East Arkansas Lane, Phi Coffee & Tea at 2430 East Pioneer Parkway, Nagoya Japanese Restaurant at 1155 West Arbrook Boulevard and Andalous at 457 East Interstate Highway 20.

Dallas
Dallas’ health inspections function on a 100-point system. A score of 100 is considered perfect and scores below 70 are considered failing, with reinspection required within 10 days.
Flies and gnats were the common theme for reports during July in Dallas. Asian Star Buffet (which also had notable violations in Fort Worth) was cited for hair in a pot of rice and mold in the ice machine.
Restaurants that scored 70 or lower: Waya at 6334 Gaston Ave., Bucky Moonshine at 2912 Elm St., Asian Star Buffet at 9208 E. RL Thornton Freeway Suite 112, Happy Mart at 4302 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Anisa’s Kitchen at 7777 Forest Lane Suite A72, Hall’s Honey Fried Chicken & BBQ at 4845 S. Lancaster Road and Sweet Bella at 8131 Forest Lane.

Plano
Plano’s restaurant inspections function on a 100-point system: A score of 100 is perfect, and 70 is considered extremely poor. Each food establishment receives between one and four routine inspections per year.
Sindbad Burger at 2400 K Ave. Ste B received a repeat violation for food stored at unsafe temperatures.
Restaurants that received a score below 70 include: Ebb And Flow at 7300 Lone Star Drive Ste C125 and Whistle Britches Chicken at 2405 Dallas Parkway.

Frisco
Frisco’s restaurant inspections function on a demerit system: Zero demerits is considered a perfect score. When an establishment has more than 30 demerits, the inspector may close the location at their discretion. That decision is based on the nature of violations, the establishment’s history and other risk factors.
Restaurants cited in Frisco health inspections struggled with roaches and food stored at unsafe temperatures.
No restaurants scored over 30 during the July inspection rounds. However, a few struggled with roaches: Mirchi Indian Cuisine at 12255 Teel Parkway, Dwaraka Curry Point at 7151 Preston Road and Concrete Cowboy at 3685 The Star Blvd.
