Old Farmer’s Almanac winter forecast: Here’s how much snow to expect in Texas
While winter is still a few months away, a newly released extended forecast is predicting how conditions might be later this year.
The Old Famer’s Almanac published its 2025-2026 winter weather forecast for the U.S. this week. This outlook is different from the Farmers’ Almanac’s winter weather forecast, which was released a couple weeks ago.
Most of the country is expected to have a typical or slightly milder winter, with some regions seeing colder temperatures.
“Don’t lose track of your snow shovels and umbrellas,” Old Famer’s Almanac editor Carol Connare said about the forecast. “Most areas will experience near-normal to slightly milder temperatures, but from the Appalachians south through the Southeast and Florida, and westward across the Ohio Valley, we’re predicting a colder-than-normal winter.”
Here’s a look at how Texas is expected to fare this winter.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s winter weather outlook for Texas
Much of the state, including the Metroplex, is expected to have a “drier and warmer winter with occasional cold snaps,” per the outlook.
The publication is recommending Texans keep their pipes insulated and prepare for a possible early northern snow come November. Temperatures are expected to be above normal, while precipitation and snowfall will both be below normal.
A few of the coldest periods in winter will be in mid-December, early and late January and early February.
As for the rest of the state, the Texas Panhandle is expected to have a milder winter overall, although snowfall and colder temperatures will come in waves. Areas around El Paso will have a warm winter with rain and snow varying by location, according to the outlook.
How does the NOAA forecast for winter compare?
Temperatures in Texas are leaning above normal for the winter months, according to an outlook from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.
The outlook, issued on Aug. 21, is a three-and-a-half month prediction valid from December 2025 to February 2026. In North Texas, the normal high for December is 57.9 degrees, 56.5 degrees in January and 60.9 in February.
Precipitation-wise, the CPC’s outlook is predicting “equal chances” for rainfall over the winter months.
When forecasters use “equal chances,” it means they think an area has three possible outcomes — well above, well below, or near normal — that are all equally likely, according to the CPC. Or, sometimes it means that there are no strong influences that would favor one outcome over another.
While this is a snapshot of how things are expected to look in the future, a one month outlook and subsequent weeks’ and days’ forecast will give a better look at what to expect as the date grows near, according to the NWS.
How accurate is the Old Farmer’s Almanac?
Since 1792, the Old Farmer’s Almanac said it has used a unique, proprietary method of predicting weather that is still used today.
The publication employs three scientific disciplines in its research:
- Solar science- The study of sunspots and other solar activity.
- Climatology- The study of prevailing weather patterns.
- Meteorology- The study of the atmosphere.
Furthermore, the publication said it predicts weather trends and events by comparing solar patterns and historical weather conditions with current solar activity.
Instead of only looking at how the weather compares to last year, the Old Farmer’s Almanac said it looks at average conditions over decades. The 2025-2026 winter forecast, is based on data from 1991 through 2020.
