This On a Budget column was requested by Star Telegram reader Linda Fisher.

When a reader requested I find New York pizza on a budget, it took me back to 10 years ago when I visited New York for the first time. As a 13-year-old girl, it felt like the slices were bigger than my face.

New York pizza is recognized for its thin crust and large slices. The crust is thick and crispy, but the center of the pie is thin and foldable to be eaten easily, according to a New York pizza joint called the Streets of New York.

So that is what I tried to find in Fort Worth.

Several pizza joints opened in Fort Worth this year. The double-decker Hideaway in Alliance, Michelin-recommended Mister O1 and the award-winning Partenope Ristorante is on the docket for West 7th.

But I went back to a downtown classic.

Our Eats Beat columnist Bud Kennedy told me about Picchi Pacchi Pizzeria, where Star-Telegram employees used to lunch when our office was on Throckmorton Street.

Picchi Pacchi has been in Fort Worth since 1996. This local pizzeria serves pizza by the slice, calzones, pastas, sandwiches, mozzarella sticks and salads. They specialize in New York pies — you can take a whole 30-inch pizza home (that’s 12 inches larger than a Costco pizza, so you can imagine how many people it would feed).

I strolled in on a Tuesday lunch hour to see what I could get for under $25. It turns out I only needed a $20 bill for a slice, a salad, tax and tip.

New York-style pizza in Fort Worth for under $20

Picchi Pacchi sells their slices between $4.25 and $6.50. (I saw on their website that there is a stuffed meat pizza slice for $11, but I didn’t notice that option when I went.) A whole 30-inch pie ranges between $22 and $33.

Their salads are between $7 and $11, calzones are no more than $15, and spaghettis and pastas are between $13 and $18. So really, whatever you chose to eat can be in the $25 budget.

For lunch, however, I went for lasagna pizza and a house salad.

The lasagna pizza has dollops of ricotta and meat that tasted like ground-up meatballs. Traditionally, New York pizza is just sauce and cheese. However, I am no New Yorker, and I wanted a little more substance.

The house salad is exactly what you think: lettuce, cucumbers, tomato, onion and the dressing of your choice. I went with ranch.
