After I saw a Facebook thread of residents asking about Philly Cheesesteaks, I knew I had to go find one On a Budget.

Though they are eaten in any season, when I think Philly Cheesesteak, I think football season. But let me just clarify, this is in no way an endorsement of the Philadelphia Eagles (I grew up in a Kansas City Chiefs household).

Philly Cheesesteaks were invented in 1930 by a hot dog street vendor. In Philadelphia, they are traditionally served with ribeye steak, smothered with provolone or Cheez-Whiz in a white bun. The thinly shaved meat, peppers, onions and melted cheese all hugged by a soft hoagie is one of America’s favorite hot sandwiches.

Sure, I could go to chains like Philly Dave’s, Charley’s or Cheba Hut, but I wanted to find somewhere locally-based. So I tried Truck Yard’s Philly Cheesesteak.

Truck Yard (founded in Dallas in 2013) is a great option for a patio lunch, dinner or night out. There are food trucks, drinks, daily live music and even a Ferris wheel. And, its happy hour can take our $25 budget a long way with $4 beers and $5 cocktails.

But I went for lunch to get a Philly Cheesesteak.

Truck Yard serves food on Thursdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

They offer more than just cheesesteaks like a smashburger, nachos and loaded hot dogs.

For the cheesesteak, you can choose chicken, ribeye or just veggie. It comes with either provolone or white queso for the cheese and topping options are bell peppers, onions and jalapenos.

I chose ribeye, provolone and all the toppings for my meal. The sandwich cost $14.99 and came with a bag of Ms. Vicky’s chips and a pickle spear.

This was so much food.

What else you can get at Truck Yard for $25

If I were to go to Truck Yard for happy hour, I could get myself five $5 cocktails. They also serve $6 frozen drinks.

Food wise, the smashburger is $12.99 for a double patty with melty cheese, pickles and secret sauce. They also have a pretzel bun hot dog drizzled with white queso for $9.99. Loaded nachos would also be a good munchie for $13.99.

I have had Truck Yard’s passion fruit mojito for $7 (during a different visit), which I highly recommend.

My total at Truck Yard

Here’s how much it cost me to eat a Philly Cheesesteak at Truck Yard.

  • Philly Cheesesteak (with chips and pickle): $14.99
  • Tax: $1.24
  • 20% Tip: $3.79
  • Total: $20.02
