Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade

Expand All

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a 1973 decision guaranteeing Americans the right to an abortion. That will almost completely limit access to legal abortions in Texas.

With Roe v. Wade overturned, most abortions in Texas will soon become a felony. Anyone who performs, induces or attempts to perform an abortion will face up to 20 years in prison if the abortion is unsuccessful, or life in prison if the abortion is completed, as well as a civil penalty of at least $100,000 for each violation.

There are only two exceptions: if a patient is in a “life-threatening physical condition” or if the pregnancy “poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function.”

Contraception options

It’s now become more important to use effective and reliable methods of contraception. Medical experts say that means using two methods simultaneously to decrease pregnancy risk.

Emergency contraception

You can buy emergency contraception without a prescription. People of any age can buy “Plan B One Step” and its generic versions at a local pharmacy over-the-counter. It sells for $35 to $60. To find an EC provider, call the Emergency Contraception Hotline at 1-888-NOT-2-LATE (668-2528). Rape survivors who want EC can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673), which will connect you to EC providers near you.

Condoms

People of any age can buy condoms from a drugstore, pharmacy, grocery store or online. A dozen condoms cost about $12, while internal or female condoms are about $2 to $4 each. You can get condoms for free or at a reduced cost from health clinics like Planned Parenthood, HIV testing centers and local health departments. Call 1-800-230-PLAN (7526) for the nearest Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood patients may also be eligible for birth control, emergency contraception, STD/STI testing and treatment, and breast and cervical cancer screenings at low cost.

Birth Control

A minor must get a parent’s permission to get prescription birth control unless they’re married. Title X clinics provide confidential sexual and reproductive health care to both teens and adults. The clinics offer services including prescriptions for the pill, pregnancy option counseling, and testing for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Sliding-scale fees are charged. Use the clinic locator tool to find a location near you. There are also several over-the-counter pills you can buy online, on telehealth platforms like Nurx and Favor. After a $15 initial consultation, your birth control is delivered to you. Without insurance, you’ll pay $15 for a pack of pills from Nurx and $6.99 to $10.66 for pills from Favor.

Options counseling

All-Options provides judgment-free unintended pregnancy support and options counseling. They help with decisions, feelings and experiences regarding pregnancy, parenting, abortion, and adoption.

The All-Options Talkline offers free peer counseling to callers from anywhere in the U.S. Call 1-888-493-0092 for support regarding abortion, adoption, infertility, parenting, and pregnancy loss. The Faith Aloud clergy counseling line offers spiritual and religious support through abortion or pregnancy experiences. Trained clergy from diverse faith backgrounds are available at 1-888-717-5010.

If you’re considering adoption, call the Texas Adoption Center at 512-893-7943 or text 361-461-3742.

Abortion providers

People considering getting an abortion can call the National Abortion Federation Hotline at 800-772-9100 to learn about their options and get case management support. Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekend.

In Texas, abortion is currently allowed through six weeks of pregnancy. They can only be provided if no embryonic or fetal cardiac activity is detected in your sonogram.

The state requires you to go to a state-directed information appointment in-person, wait for 24 hours, and then go back for another appointment for your abortion. This means you must make at least two trips to the health center.

If you’re looking for resources outside of Texas, 26 clinics currently provide abortion in states closest to Texas, namely in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. Visit needabortion.org for a list of locations.

If you can travel out of state, Whole Woman’s Health is now offering abortion pills delivered by mail for up to 11 weeks of pregnancy in New Mexico. Call 877-835-8631 to check your eligibility. Also, if you visit a Whole Woman’s Health clinic in another state, the cost of your travel and care may be fully covered.

Plan C provides information to help people access abortion pills.

For after-abortion support, call the Exhale hotline at 1 866-439-4253 or text 617-749-2948.
