How many movies and TV shows filmed in Texas this year? Here’s a list
Since 2021, film and television production has exploded in Texas in part because of Fort Worth native Taylor Sheridan moving a majority of his projects to the state. Seasons of “1883,” “Lioness” and “Landman” are just a few of his shows to film here.
Texas has already welcomed several productions to the state this year, with several more lined up in the coming months.
Production in Texas is expected to get even bigger due to the passing of Senate Bill 22, which authorizes the Texas Comptroller to deposit $300 million into the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Fund every two years until 2035. The bill goes into effect on Sept. 1.
Also, a new film and television production studio from Sheridan in Fort Worth is expected to bring more projects to the Metroplex. The 450,000-square-foot campus features sound stages, post-production suites and ample space to build more sets and props.
Here’s a look at what has filmed in Texas this year so far, and what else is coming.
Currently filming in Texas
‘The Chosen’
“The Chosen” season 6 has been filming in Midlothian this spring and summer and will wrap production in September.
The Biblical drama series, based on the life of Jesus, has primarily filmed at Camp Hoblitzelle since season 3. The sixth season will cover the Crucifixion.
“The Chosen” season 6 finale will release in theaters on March 12, 2027. 5&2 Studios has not revealed when the rest of the season will premiere.
‘The Dutton Ranch’
The new “Yellowstone” spinoff starring Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) has been filming across North Texas since mid-August.
Initially, the Paramount+ show had “Rio Palo” as a working title when it was announced a few weeks ago. Then, the show was given the working title of “The Dutton Ranch” this week, according to Deadline, who also reported that Annette Bening joined the cast as a Texas ranch owner.
Deadline also revealed the following logline for the show:
“The Dutton Ranch, home to Beth Dutton (Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Hauser), is a testament to the peace they sought, fought for, and nearly died for, as they’ve come to cherish their 7,000-acre land. With tough times and stiff competition, Beth and Rip do what they must to survive, all while ensuring Carter (Finn Little) becomes the man he’s supposed to be.”
Paramount has yet to announce a premiere date for the spinoff, although it will likely release sometime in 2026.
Matthew McConaughey/Woody Harrelson
It’s unclear if the Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson-led show “Brothers” has resumed filming.
The comedy series began filming in Austin in May, although production paused in mid-June when showrunner David West Read exited the project due to creative differences. Shorty after, Lee Eisenberg was in negotiations to take over as showrunner and there has been no update since.
“Brothers” is loosely inspired on the pair’s actual friendship that has been ongoing for nearly three decades, according to Variety.
“Matthew and Woody’s friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas,” the logline for the show reads.
Upcoming projects filming in Texas
Taylor Kitsch thriller
Production on hostage thriller “Eleven Days” is slated to begin in September.
The Peter Landesman-directed film stars Taylor Kitsch (”Friday Night Lights”), Diego Luna (”Andor”), Jason Isaacs (”The White Lotus”) and Rhea Seehorn (”Better Call Saul”). The movie is based on William T. Harper’s book “Eleven Days in Hell: The 1974 Carrasco Prison Siege at Huntsville, Texas.”
It has not been revealed where in Texas the movie will film. However, Deadline reported that principal photography will commence in September.
“The film takes place in the sweltering heat of a Texas summer in 1974 as ruthless prisoner Federico Carrasco (Luna) takes control of the Huntsville Penitentiary. The prison’s priest, Father Joseph O’Brien (Isaacs) joins forces with Jim Estelle (Kitsch), head of the Texas Department of Corrections, by entering the eye of the storm and offering himself as a hostage to out-game Carrasco and his men in an attempt to save the lives of the other hostages,” according to Deadline.
‘The Madison’
Season 2 of “Yellowstone” spinoff “The Madison” will begin filming in Fort Worth in September.
The first season of the series has yet to be released, but 101 Studios CEO David Glasser confirmed to the Star-Telegram that season 2 is happening and filming soon. While it’s unclear how it connects to “Yellowstone,” “The Madison” will star Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams and Matthew Fox.
“The Madison” has been described as a “heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”
‘Lioness’
Following the filming of “Lioness” season 2 in Fort Worth last year, the spy thriller is returning to Cowtown for its third season this fall.
In addition to Glasser mentioning “The Madison” season 2, the producer also confirmed that “Lioness” season 3 will begin production in Fort Worth in October.
“Lioness” follows CIA operative Joe (Zoe Saldaña) as she balances her “personal and professional lives as the tip of the spear in the agency’s war on terror.” The series also stars Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly and Morgan Freeman.
Wrapped filming in Texas
Season 2of Sheridan’s “Landman” filmed in and around Fort Worth this year for several months.
The Paramount+ series began filming in late March in and around Cowtown, including at TCU and in downtown. Production also spent time in nearby cities such as Cresson, Benbrook, Jacksboro and Springtown.
“Landman” wrapped in early August en route for a Nov. 16 premiere date. The series stars Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Sam Elliott, Ali Larter, Andy Garcia, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, Paulina Chávez and more.
Kevin Bacon horror movie
Kevin Bacon brought his family to Texas to star in the aptly-titled horror film “Family Movie.”
The film stars Bacon, his wife (and fellow actor) Kyra Sedgwick and their children Sosie and Travis Bacon. Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon will also co-direct the film with a screenplay from Dan Beers. Here’s a synopsis of the film:
“A filmmaking family finds themselves in a real-life horror movie when a body turns up on the set of their low-budget slasher, forcing them to cover up the murder to keep filming.”
“Family Movie” filmed in Austin and Round Top in June. No release date has been set for the film.
Boyd Holbrook Marine film
Indie drama “Atonement” began production in Dallas this summer.
The film is based on the 2012 New Yorker piece of the same name about a troubled Marine who “seeks to reconcile with the survivors of an Iraqi family he and his unit fired on back in 2003.” Reed Van Dyk writes and directs the film.
“Atonement” stars Kenneth Branagh, Boyd Holbrook and Hiam Abbass. The film shot at Dallas’ South Side Studios (2901 Botham Jean Blvd.) in June and July. No release date has been set for the film.
