All flights inbound to DFW Airport, Love Field held at origins as ice storm strikes

All flights that were inbound to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport or Dallas Love Field were at times on Tuesday held at their origin cities as freezing rain spoiled travel in North Texas.

An air traffic procedure known as a ground stop was in place for DFW until 3:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. For Love Field, a ground stop ended at 10:15 a.m., according to tracking data company Flight Aware.

There were 945 flights that either were scheduled to depart from DFW Airport or that were intended to arrive there that were canceled between midnight and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Flight Aware. In each case, about half of all flights were canceled.

There were 290 flights that either were scheduled to depart from Love Field or that were intended to arrive there that were canceled between midnight and 4 p.m. on Tuesday. In each case, about 40% of all flights were canceled.

Representatives of both airports advised travelers to check with airlines on the status of flights before heading to the airport.

Worldwide on Tuesday, Dallas-based Southwest was the airline with highest number of canceled flights, 566, and was followed by Fort Worth-based American Airlines, which canceled 549 flights.

Southwest and American waived for customers traveling to, through or from either DFW Airport or Love Field a fee that the airlines typically charge to change a ticket.

Freezing rain and sleet are forecast in the region through Wednesday.
