Fort Worth-area school districts announced cancellations for Friday after road conditions deteriorated following a winter storm that dumped sleet and freezing rain on North Texas for several days.
An ice storm warning ended at 9 a.m. Thursday, but roads remained icy in spots and refreezing caused conditions to worsen overnight into Friday morning. Officials in the Fort Worth area say travel has been dangerous early Friday morning, with dozens of accidents reported, including two fatalities.
Freeway overpasses and other elevated roadways were iced over early Friday morning, requiring the closure of access entrance ramps for the majority of the city’s freeways by using emergency vehicles and/or barricades, Fort Worth police said. Crews from the Fort Worth Department of Transportation and Public Works and Texas Department of Transportation are installing barricades, sanding roadways and are working as quickly as safely possible to try to ensure the roadways are open and safe for travel for morning commuters, police said.
The Fort Worth school district followed normal dismissal times Monday but allowed parents to pick up students early. The district said in an announcement at the end of the day Monday that classes would be canceled Tuesday. The district announced the closure will continue through Friday.
These are the public school districts and universities that have announced Friday closures. Some districts that had planned a late start Friday have now canceled classes for the day.
