What’s the one grocery store Texans want most? (It’s not H-E-B. We have those.)

Though Texans have their beloved H-E-Bs, there’s another grocery store chain with a cult following that folks in the Lone Star State wish would open locations here.

MarketBeat, a financial media company, carried out a survey with over 3,000 participants to figure out what brands Texans wish they had closer to home.

One name ranked No. 1 on Texans’ wish lists. It is a brand that has been called “the Disney of grocery stores.” A record-breaking 3,000 people lined up when the chain’s first location in North Carolina opened in 2019.

The store? Wegmans.

What is Wegman’s known for?

Founded in 1916 in Rochester, New York, Wegman’s was one of the first true one-stop-shop grocery stores.

This grocer is known for its expansive, high-quality produce selection – a Southern Living article claims you can fill your cart without leaving the produce section.

Wegman’s bakery also is highly raved about. Fresh sourdough loaves, “double the chip” cookies, butter boy cookies, almond croissants, fruit tarts, cannoli dip, slices of cake and tiramisu are just a few of the customers’ suggestions.

They have both everyday grocery needs as well as market-style cheese selections, seafood, sushi bar and delis. Shoppers can easily find hot and prepared foods to go.

Reddit users also rave about the store brand’s products, saying they “are way way cheaper and excellent quality.”

Some compare the supermarket to Whole Foods except for more affordable with more product options. Southern Living says Wegmans was the replacement for the lack of H-E-B and Central Market on the East Coast.

Is Texas getting a Wegman’s grocery store?

Wegman’s currently operates over 110 stores across New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Delaware and Connecticut.

As for a Wegman’s supermarket coming to Texas, there has been no word.

According to Wegman’s website, the only future stores in the works are in North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

“You’ll see from our list of future projects that our new store growth is concentrated in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions,” according to the website. “There are other sites we are working on, but are not at liberty to disclose as yet.”
