North Texas under heat advisory as temperatures may finally reach 100 degrees
A heat advisory is in effect for portions of North Texas on Thursday, July 24, as temperatures are expected to reach triple digits.
The advisory is in place from noon Thursday until 9 p.m. Friday, July 25, for Tarrant, Dallas, Parker, Denton, Wise, Collin and Palo Pinto counties, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth. Several other counties north and east of the Metroplex are also under the advisory.
North Texans can expect temperatures from 97 to 102 degrees Thursday, along with heat index values up to 107 degrees.
The NWS recommends folks protect themselves from the heat by wearing lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing. Wearing hats can also help, in addition to applying sunscreen.
North Texas’ chance for 100 degrees
If the Metroplex reaches 100 degrees Thursday, it will be the first occurrence this year.
The hottest temperature recorded thus far has been 97 degrees on a few days this year, per NWS data. On average, North Texas records its first triple-digit day on July 1.
If North Texas does reach triple digits Thursday, it will be the latest first occurrence since 2021. That year the Metroplex recorded its first 100 degree day on July 25.
Over the past three years, the region has recorded its first 100-degree day of the year in June:
- 2024- June 23
- 2023- June 25
- 2022- June 11
If North Texas fails to reach 100 degrees in July, it will be the first time since 2007, according to WFAA meteorologist Mariel Ruiz.
In 2007, the Metroplex recorded its first 100 degree day on Aug. 11 en route to five total days that year. There have only been two years on record that North Texas has never reached triple digits — 1906 and 1973.
Warm weekend ahead for North Texas
If North Texas does not reach 100 degrees Thursday, it has another chance Friday.
High temperatures will be at 100 degrees for much of the region, with heat index values a few degrees higher, according to the NWS. While there’s no heat advisory in place for Friday yet, that would likely come closer to the day.
Heading into Saturday, July 26, a weak tropical system will help increase clouds and moisture over the southeastern areas of the region.
Dallas-Fort Worth has a low chance of rain (20%) Saturday, as temperatures will stick around the mid-90s, per the NWS. There are no rain chances in sight on Sunday, July 27, although temperatures will remain around the mid-90s.
