New ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff filming in North Texas is actually Beth and Rip show
Not much was known about the “Yellowstone” spinoff “Rio Palo” that began filming in North Texas this month — until now.
The city of Ferris confirmed Thursday in a news release that the show is actually the previously announced Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler spinoff series, which has been in development since “Yellowstone” ended late last year.
Ferris officials said they confirmed the news with 101 Studios, a producer on the series, and decided to inform the public.
“We’ve gotten all the questions. What’s being filmed, who’s in town, what’s going to happen in the show, what’s your favorite [Taylor] Sheridan show, what do you think about Beth, is Rip really there, and would you ever be in it?” City Manager Brooks Williams said in a news release. “And the truth is, we’re just grateful to be part of it in any way.”

In addition to Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), the spinoff series will also feature the TV couple’s adopted son, Carter, portrayed by Finn Little.
Ferris serves as one of the primary locations for filming, which city officials say has been described as a “hopeful multi-season production.” Along with coordinating day-to-day operations, the city said it’s ensuring the production team feels supported while in the town of nearly 3,000 people.
“Let’s be honest… Beth would’ve taken over City Hall before lunch, started a bar fight by dinner, and still had half the town asking her for career advice by breakfast. She’s brutal and brilliant and never once waits her turn,” Williams said. “As for Rip? I’d need about six months of sunlight, two ribeyes a day, and a pharmacy’s worth of vitamins just to look like him in a blurry wide shot. And that’s if you squint and hit fast forward. Until then, we’ll be off camera doing what cities do best, which is holding things together and staying out of the way when we need to.”
More on Beth and Rip spinoff series
When the Beth and Rip spinoff began filming in early August, the title given for the production was “Rio Palo.”
In conversation with the Star-Telegram last week, 101 Studios CEO David Glasser confirmed that “Rio Palo” was merely a temporary name and not the official title of the series.
“That’s not the name of it; that’s just a temp name. But yes, it’s really a ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff,” Glasser said.
The series was also rumored to be titled “Dutton Ranch”; however, it’s unclear if that name is official.
In addition to Ferris, “Rio Palo” has already filmed in Mineral Wells and Cleburne.
The series will also visit several local cities over the next few weeks, including Boyd, Weatherford, Rio Vista and Fort Worth. In Cowtown, the series is expected to film at the new 450,000-square-foot film and television production campus in north Fort Worth.
