A new $1 coin honors Texas’ outer space legacy. Here’s what it looks like
Texas is getting a special salute from the U.S. Mint this month, and it’s one you can hold in the palm of your hand.
A new $1 coin is set to debut as part of a national series honoring American innovation, and this latest design shines a spotlight on the Lone Star state’s role in space exploration.
From the imagery to the inspiration behind it, the release carries a powerful message about Texas’ role in pushing boundaries and shaping the future.
The coin officially drops July 29, with limited quantities available online.
Here’s what to know.
What’s on the coin?
The tails side of the coin features a striking image of an astronaut on a spacewalk, with the International Space Station floating in the background.
It’s a visual salute to the scientific, logistical and global leadership that Mission Control in Texas has provided since the early days of space travel.
The front of the coin, shared across the Innovation series, shows the Statue of Liberty in profile, along with the phrases “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.”
A gear-shaped mark on the front symbolizes innovation and industry, fitting for a series that highlights American breakthroughs.
Why Texas?
For those who know their NASA history, the choice to spotlight Texas makes perfect sense.
“Since its very inception, NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston has been the epicenter for manned spaceflight,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a news release from the U.S. Mint. “Texas is the launchpad to Mars, and we’re proud that this coin captures the spirit of innovation and exploration that reflects Texas’ pioneering roots.”
U.S. Mint Acting Director Kristie McNally echoed that, saying Texas has played a “vital role in advancing America’s leadership in space exploration.”
