Why Texas?

For those who know their NASA history, the choice to spotlight Texas makes perfect sense.

“Since its very inception, NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston has been the epicenter for manned spaceflight,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a news release from the U.S. Mint. “Texas is the launchpad to Mars, and we’re proud that this coin captures the spirit of innovation and exploration that reflects Texas’ pioneering roots.”

U.S. Mint Acting Director Kristie McNally echoed that, saying Texas has played a “vital role in advancing America’s leadership in space exploration.”

How can I get a coin?

The coin officially goes on sale Monday, July 29 at 11 a.m. You can order rolls and bags directly from the U.S. Mint’s website.

Supplies are limited, and there’s a 10-item product limit per household for the first 24 hours.
