Republican Rick Barnes faces Democrat KC Chowdury in the race for Tarrant County tax assessor-collector. The office contracts with local jurisdictions to bill and collect property taxes. The office also handles title transfers and vehicle registrations.
Barnes is an insurance agent, business consultant and public speaker. He also served as mayor pro tem of Keller, where he worked to lower taxes, from 2014 to 2017, according to his website.
Chowdhury is a former American Airlines employee and local business owner, according to his campaign Facebook page.
Neither candidate responded to multiple requests to fill out the Star-Telegram’s questionnaire.
Barnes and Chowdhury face off at a time of heightened scrutiny over the county’s property appraisal system. The tax assessor-collector has a voting role on the Board of Directors of the Tarrant Appraisal District, which has faced pushback from school districts and other critics of its recent changes to its property reappraisal plan.
