Summer is just around the corner, and that means peak produce season.

Prices for farm fruit are expected to increase 2.5 percent in 2025, while prices for farm vegetables will fall 14.1 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

No matter where you shop, chances are you will buy at least some produce. But oftentimes, a pint of blueberries for $7 is too much. And no one has time to visit multiple stores to find the best price.

Except we did.

The Star-Telegram’s service journalism team set out to price-check 23 common produce items at seven well-shopped stores in Fort Worth during the week of May 5.

According to 2023 market share numbers, Walmart reigns as the most popular grocer in the D-FW area. Our price check determines the most affordable grocer for produce in Fort Worth.

We went to Aldi, H-E-B, Kroger, Target, Tom Thumb, Walmart and WinCo. We included WinCo this month after getting some reader feedback in April. Here’s what we found.

Average produce prices for April 2025

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, these are the average prices for produce items as of April 2025, the latest data available.

  • Banana per pound: $0.64

  • Navel Oranges per pound: $1.49

  • Field-grown tomatoes per pound: $1.82

Methodology

To gather the data, our team created a shopping list of 23 common produce products.

At all seven stores, we looked at the lowest prices, no matter the brand. However, there are a few specifics you should know.

  • All produce recorded was not organic.

  • We only looked at regular prices, not member or discounted prices.

  • To make all the data consistent, we compared items that were the same value in weight (each, 1 pound, 1 pint). An example of this would be looking at apples sold individually rather than in a 5-pound bag.

  • Blank spots on the graph did not mean the store doesn’t sell that specific fruit or vegetable, but rather that they did not carry the weight measurement that we price checked at other stores.

Lastly, it’s important to know which stores we shopped at.

  • Aldi: 5617 S Hulen St., Fort Worth.

  • H-E-B: 3451 Heritage Trace Pkwy., Fort Worth

  • Kroger: 3120 S University Drive, Fort Worth

  • Target: 301 Carroll St., Fort Worth

  • Tom Thumb: 3100 S Hulen St, Fort Worth

  • Walmart: 6300 Oakmont Blvd., Fort Worth

  • WinCo: 8000 Crowley Road, Fort Worth

Overall, WinCo was found to have the best overall prices for produce.

  1. WinCo

  2. Aldi

  3. Walmart

  4. Target

  5. H-E-B

  6. Kroger

  7. Tom Thumb

However, some stores were found to have the best deals on certain types of products.

  • WinCo led with the most items at the lowest price.

  • Aldi and Walmart were also competitive on several items.

  • Tom Thumb and Kroger rarely had the lowest price.
