$4 wine and $5 roses for Valentine’s Day? Here’s where to shop in Fort Worth

Showing someone your love for them doesn’t have to hurt your pockets– after all, it’s really the thought that counts.

Shoppers are expected to spend a record of $199.78 for Valentine’s gifts, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2026 Valentine’s Day spending report.

Whether you are celebrating with a valentine or by yourself, the NRF says people splurge no matter what. Fifty-five percent of those who plan to celebrate plan to buy gifts for their significant other or other family members. Those who do not celebrate still plan to spend on self-care or outings with friends and family.

The Star-Telegram service journalism team set out to prove that you do not need to spend $200 on a made-up commercial holiday. Gifts like one’s favorite bottle of wine, a handmade bouquet of flowers or a homemade dessert mean just as much.

So, we checked all the Valentine’s Day goodies at Trader Joe’s, which is known for its cheap wine, fresh flowers and festive treats.

Methodology

To gather the data, our team shopped for Valentine’s Day themed flowers, sweets, wine and cards.

There are a few specifics you should know.

  • All prices listed below are the cheapest price option we found. Example: for a “bouquet of flowers,” we chose carnations (rather than orchids) since they were marked as the most affordable option.
  • Trader Joe’s carries only Trader Joe’s brand store-name items. There are exceptions when it comes to wine, beer and cheeses. Those who want name brand items, like Hershey Kisses, will not find them at Trader Joe’s.
  • When shopping at Trader Joe’s, note that many sweets are located above the freezer aisles as well as in checkout lines.
  • Though this isn’t a Valentine’s gift, it’s still worth noting that the store sells red, heart-shaped pasta for $2.49.

Lastly, it’s important to know that we shopped at the Fort Worth Trader Joe’s at 2701 S. Hulen St. This is the only Trader Joe’s store in Fort Worth. North Texas shoppers should note that most Trader Joe’s locations share the same prices, though the products they carry may vary.

Key takeaways

Key takeaways from our analysis show:

  • Trader Joe’s offers frozen dessert options that other generic grocery stores wouldn’t carry, like the heart-shaped macarons and ready-to-heat lava cakes.
  • Trader Joe’s has candy options; however, they are not necessarily the cheapest, nor do they offer Valentine’s favorites like Reese’s or Nerds.
  • Customers cannot beat getting a card for $0.99 as well.

Overall, Trader Joe’s is a great place to shop for wine, flowers and a card, with unique options for desserts.
