TCU is building a five-story, $42 million parking garage this summer. Here’s where.
TCU is planning to start building a new parking garage with space for 950 cars later this year.
Construction of the five-story, 320,000-square-foot project will begin in July, according to state records. The parking garage, which will cost an estimated $42 million, is slated to be complete in February 2027.
The garage will be built at the site of an existing surface parking lot at 2651 W. Cantey St. It is expected to expand parking availability for campus visitors and TCU staff.
The new parking garage will sit at the center of three new student housing complexes TCU has proposed building on the east side of campus. All three of the developments are still being planned, and it’s unclear how many new beds they could add to campus. Much of the property, which TCU already owns, is being platted into larger lots by the city, an effort which will need to be completed before any projects move forward.
TCU is expected to begin building two buildings for new student housing near West Berry Street in April. Together, both projects will add 779 beds and 19,800 square feet of ground-floor retail space to the campus. The project is expected to cost almost $83 million.
New development is a cornerstone of TCU’s strategic plan, which aims to grow the university’s enrollment to 14,900 undergraduate students by 2035. About 11,000 undergraduates were enrolled for the fall 2024 semester.
Finding housing has historically been a challenge for students, the majority of whom are required to live on campus for their first two years at the university. TCU is bordered by neighborhoods of primarily single-family homes.
The presence of “stealth dorms” — rental properties occupied primarily by students — has created tension with residents in nearby neighborhoods for over a decade. A bill proposed in the Texas Senate to remove occupancy caps on residential dwellings could exacerbate the issue. TCU’s growth has also made it difficult for some residents to find parking.
TCU also wants to transform West Berry Street into Fort Worth’s “place to be” as part of the strategic plan. If the university builds out the entirety of its vision for the campus, it could add up to 25 new buildings. TCU has yet to unveil a capital campaign to support the plan, though a fundraising plan is in development.
