Fort Worth man stood beside bed and shot sister’s boyfriend, murder warrant says
Clifford Morris observed Gregg Mitchell Jr. being verbally abusive to his sister Tuesday morning at her home on May Street, and at one time Mitchell put his sister against the wall, Morris told police.
Hours later after a night of drinking, Morris and Mitchell began arguing about how Mitchell was treating Morris’ sister, Brandi Morris, he said.
Clifford Morris told detectives he felt threatened by Mitchell, who had a gun in his waistband, according to an arrest warrant.
So at some point, Morris pulled his gun out of his jacket, walked up to the bed where Mitchell was lying and fired at Mitchell multiple times before he fled from the house, according to the warrant obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Thursday.
Mitchell was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.
Hours later, once detectives investigated the shooting, Morris was arrested and booked into jail. He remained in the Tarrant County Jail on Thursday in lieu of $150,000 bail.
Morris, 23, of Fort Worth, is expected to be formally charged with murder in the next few days.
Mitchell, 30, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a ruling by officials with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The arrest warrant written by Detective Kim Bickley gave this account of the shooting:
Brandi Morris told detectives she, her brother and her boyfriend, Gregg Mitchell Jr., had been partying during the night.
She and Mitchell argued while they were drinking and it upset her brother, but she claimed her brother left the residence about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Clifford Morris later told police he never left.
At about 8 a.m. Tuesday, Brandi Morris said she left the residence to get beer at a store and on her way back she heard a gunshot coming from her home on May Street. She walked into the residence and found her boyfriend shot.
Patrol officers responded to the shooting call in the 2000 block of May Street.
Police later located Clifford Morris and interviewed him.
After the shooting, Clifford Morris told detectives he fled the house and threw his handgun in an alley between May and South Jennings streets. Police found the weapon.
At the time of his arrest, Clifford Morris was on probation for arson and drug possession involving an incident in May 2018, according to Tarrant County criminal court records.
Also in 2018, he was sentenced to 120 days in jail for a May 2018 assault, according to court records.
