One North Texas bar and restaurant is serving up a State Fair of Texas-inspired cocktail far from the fairgrounds.
The fair begins this Friday, and Chef Point Bar & Restaurant in Colleyville is getting in on the fun. The eatery has crafted a bloody mary full of State Fair goodies including a turkey leg, corn dog, funnel cake, grilled corn, caramel apple, bacon and celery.
What started as an April Fool’s Day joke earlier this year has now turned into a reality, Chef Point co-owner Paula Nwaeze said.
“We just put it together real quickly and took a picture of it and did an email as an April Fool’s joke,” she said. “Some people didn’t realize it was an April Fool’s joke and came into the restaurant and wanted to get it.”
Since the curiosity was there, Chef Point kept tinkering with the idea to bring the special bloody mary to life.
The hardest part about crafting the cocktail was simply trying to make sure everything stayed upright and didn’t tip the glass over, Nwaeze said. But Chef Point has had practice with showstopping bloody mary’s.
A staple on the restaurant’s menu is the “Bloody Best,” a bloody mary topped with fried chicken tenders, a burger slider, waffle fries, grilled shrimp, jalapeno pepper, green onion, celery, pickle spear and bacon. This gastronomical bomb costs $39, and you get a beer while you wait for the cocktail.
The State Fair bloody mary has the same $39 price tag, and again, comes with a beer while the Chef Point crew puts the drink together, Nwaeze said. The special cocktail will be on the menu from Sept. 29 to Oct. 22, the same length as the fair.
“We’ll probably make it an annual thing,” Nwaeze said. “As guests come in, I’m sure they’ll give us some suggestions on how to try some other foods and we’ll change it up and try different food next year.”
Chef Point Bar & Restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at 5220 State Highway 121, Colleyville.
The State Fair of Texas is known for its fried culinary delights, which patrons can start snacking on this Friday and until Oct. 22. For a guide on the fair, visit the Star-Telegram’s coverage here.
