A GoFundMe for the teacher who was shot at Timberview High School on Wednesday has raised more than $10,000.
Calvin Pettitt was shot after he broke up a fight between students Timothy Simpkins, 18, and Zacchaeus Selby, 15, witnesses have said. Simpkins, according to an arrest warrant, pulled a gun from his backpack and shot Selby and Pettitt.
The GoFundMe campaign, titled “Help a Hero,” started on Saturday. The woman who started the GoFundMe wrote on the page that Pettitt is the stepson of her son’s fifth-grade teacher.
Pettitt, 25, was released from the hospital Monday, Arlington police said. He’s an English teacher at Timberview, which is in the Mansfield school district.
“Without violating the family’s privacy by revealing too many details, he suffered major injuries that he was hospitalized for and could have very well taken his life,” the GoFundMe description says. “As you can imagine, no one plans for this type of thing to happen and he will certainly have a long road of recovery ahead.”
As of Monday afternoon, the campaign had raised about $10,600. According to the GoFundMe page — which has been verified by GoFundMe management — all funds “will go directly to Calvin to help with whatever medical expenses were incurred as a result of this shooting.”
Selby was still hospitalized Monday in good condition, according to police. A verified GoFundMe account for the 15-year-old student had raised over $7,000 as of Monday.
Simpkins has been released on bail after he was charged with three counts of aggravated assault in the shooting, in which police said a female student also was grazed by a bullet. She was treated and released from the hospital last week.
