Wayback Burgers has a new North Texas spot. Don’t confuse it with two local faves

North Texas has a new burger restaurant with a naming history and owner that sound a lot like two other local burger joints — but the new Wayback Burgers in Hickory Creek isn’t affiliated with Jake’s Burgers or Kincaid’s.

Wayback Burgers is a national burger chain that opened in Delaware in 1991 as Jake’s Hamburgers — not to be confused with the 40-year-old DFW chain Jake’s Burgers and Beers founded by Jake Keller, the nephew of Dallas burger restaurateur Jack Keller of Keller’s Drive-In.

The newly-opened Hickory Creek location is operated by franchisee Thomas Kincaid, not to be confused with Fort Worth’s 80-year-old Kincaid’s Burgers. Kincaid’s Burgers is still family-owned by Jonathan Gentry and Christian Gentry, grandsons of the restaurant’s original griller, Ownyel Robert (O.R.) Gentry.

Wayback really has no Texas connection at all, other than its 15 locations across the Lone Star state and its new tie to local franchisee Kincaid. There is also a Wayback Burgers location in Fort Worth at 13075 N. Saginaw Blvd. near Sendera Ranch.

So Wayback Burgers isn’t a Texas original, but Texans can still appreciate a burger. Here’s what’s on the menu.

Wayback Burger menu

Wayback Burger “aims to deliver burgers that taste like they were made the way customers would make them on the grill, if they had the time and energy,” according to its website. The restaurant prides itself on made-to-order meals that aren’t sitting under a heat lamp for hours.

While burgers are Wayback’s specialty, they also serve chicken, cheesesteaks and hot dogs. Pretty much every single one of their bugers has a double patty. And there are also options for vegan impossible meat or veggie patties.

The “Cheeeesy” burger is a fan favorite. It’s simply four slices of melted American cheese between two beef patties and inverted butter buns.

Their milkshakes are “hand-dipped,” which means they are made with hand-scooped ice cream and milk in a blender, and not just dispensed from a soft-serve machine.
