Ed Harris joins cast of new ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff show filming in North Texas

Another big name has been cast in the new “Yellowstone” spinoff filming in North Texas.

Deadline reported Wednesday that Ed Harris (”Apollo 13,” “Westworld”) has joined the cast of the Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler-led spinoff tentatively titled “The Dutton Ranch.”

Harris is slated to play Everett McKinney, “a weathered veteran and veterinarian who treats animals with compassion and understanding, and possesses a good sense of humor.”

The 74-year-old actor joins Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Finn Little and the recently cast Annette Bening.

This is the first time Harris and “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan have worked together.

“The Dutton Ranch, home to Beth Dutton (Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Hauser), is a testament to the peace they sought, fought for, and nearly died for, as they’ve come to cherish their 7,000-acre land. With tough times and stiff competition, Beth and Rip do what they must to survive, all while ensuring Carter (Little) becomes the man he’s supposed to be,” the show’s logline reads.

Ed Harris joins ‘The Dutton Ranch’ show

Harris has lit up the big and small screen since the late 1970s.

His first major role came as real-life astronaut John Glenn in 1983’s “The Right Stuff.” Harris followed that up with a number of roles over the ‘80s and ‘90s in “Sweet Dreams,” “The Abyss,” “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “The Firm,” “Apollo 13,” “The Rock” and “The Truman Show.”

Harris continued his film dominance in the 2000s and 2010s in projects such as “Pollock,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “The Hours,” “Radio,” “A History of Violence” and “National Treasure: Book of Secrets.” His first major role in a television show came on “Westworld,” in which he appeared in all four seasons.

More on ‘The Dutton Ranch’ show

Word first broke on the “Yellowstone” spinoff in mid-August under the then working title of “Rio Palo.”

The city of Ferris announced that the show would be filming in its small town of nearly 3,000. About a week later, 101 Studios CEO David Glasser confirmed to the Star-Telegram that “Rio Palo” was merely a temporary name for the show.

On Aug. 21, Ferris officials confirmed the spinoff is actually the Beth and Rip-led spinoff that was announced shortly after “Yellowstone” season 5 concluded late last year. Deadline reported a few days later that the spinoff has a new working title: “The Dutton Ranch.”

In addition to Ferris, the spinoff has filmed in Boyd, Cleburne, Rio Vista, Fort Worth and Mineral Wells. Paramount has yet to announce a premiere date for the spinoff, although it will likely release sometime in 2026.
