More on ‘The Senior’

“The Senior” follows Chiklis as the real-life Flynt, who returns to his alma mater for one last shot at redemption.

“At 59, Mike Flynt might be too old to play college football—but not too old to settle unfinished business. Nearly forty years after leaving his team, he returns to his alma mater to face the moment that changed everything. Bruised, doubted, and nearly broken, he fights for one last game—not for glory, but for the teammates he lost, the family he fractured, and the ending he still believes is possible,” the film’s synopsis reads.

In 1971 during his senior year, Flynt was kicked off Sul Ross State University’s football team for fighting.

At a college reunion in the summer of 2007, Flynt expressed regret to his fellow teammates about being kicked off the team based in Alpine, Texas, according to ESPN. After his friends dared him to come back, Flynt soon learned that he was eligible to play and worked to make the Sul Ross roster.

After missing the first five games of the season because of groin and neck injuries, Flynt made his debut on Oct. 13, 2007, and was integral to his team’s 45-42 overtime win against Texas Lutheran University.

Flynt released a book about the experience a year later called, “The Senior: My Amazing Year as a 59-Year-Old College Football Linebacker.”

In 2022, “The Senior” filmed scenes in Tarrant County at Fort Worth’s Scarborough-Handley Field and Haltom City’s Birdville Stadium.

In addition to Chiklis, “The Senior” stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Brandon Flynn and Rob Corddry. The film is written by Robert Eisele and directed by Rod Lurie.
