A woman has died after police believe she may have shot a teenage boy then turned the gun on herself in Arlington on Sunday afternoon, according to the Arlington Police Department.
The woman was identified as Vertalee McPherson, 45, of Arlington, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's website on Monday.
Arlington police spokesman Christopher Cook said officers were dispatched to a residential area in the 600 block of West Inwood Drive at approximately 3:06 p.m.
When officers arrived, they located a 13-year old boy with a gunshot wound to the neck. Cook said soon after, officers quickly developed information that the shooter, a woman in her 40’s, was in the backyard of the residence.
As officers began to make contact with her, she turned the handgun on herself and shot one round into her chest.
Cook said the teen was transported to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to survive the shooting. McPherson was transported to Medical City Arlington Hospital for her gunshot wound.
McPherson was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m. at the hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.
Investigators believe that there was some type of physical altercation between two women at the location and are treating the investigation as a domestic-related incident. Cook said the exact sequencing and details on how the teenager was shot is still under investigation.
