Troy Aikman says Dallas Cowboys problems likely continue as long as Jerry Jones is in charge

Troy Aikman said he’s unlikely to join the Dallas Cowboys’ front office as long as owner and general manager Jerry Jones is in charge.

The Cowboys Hall of Famer and FOX analyst told The Musers on KCTK/1310 AM “The Ticket” Tuesday morning that he’s toyed with the idea of a GM job in the NFL as another chapter in his life after his television career.

The Cowboys, as has been suggested before, would seem to be a perfect fit for Aikman. He doesn’t see it happening in Dallas.

“I doubt it. I think that’s a real long shot. I believe it’s unlikely that Jerry will ever bring anybody in that can help this football team in that regard just because he’s been real stubborn and steadfast in that he’s the one in charge,” he said. “I think, in a lot of ways, until that changes this team is going to have some problems.”

“Would he ever ask me to come be a part of it? I think that would be a real leap of faith. I don’t envision that happening at any point no matter who’s in charge out there.”

Would he accept it if Jones did offer him the GM job?

“First of all, its not going to happen,” Aikman said with a laugh. “But if a call were to be made, I think before discussions got very far there would have to be parameters agreed to first.”

Aikman said if he were calling the shots for a team, only the head coach would have a weekly radio show. Jones and Cowboys’ vice president Stephen Jones both have multiple weekly radio appearances and Jerry Jones talks to the media after most games.

“There should be one voice and it should come from the head coach,” he said. “The players should know that. The owner ultimately makes the decisions, we all know that. He’s the one who signs off. But I think there has to be one voice and one person the players answer to.”
