North Texas is getting major championship golf back in ... 2027

The PGA of America is moving its headquarters to North Texas and bringing with it major championship golf.

The 2027 and 2034 PGA Championships will be played at a to-be-built course in Frisco, which will also become the new home of the PGA of America.

In a news release, the PGA of America said the new headquarters will be a 600-acre, mixed-use development worth more than $500 million. It’s scheduled to be built on a parcel of land west of the Dallas North Tollway and South of U.S. Highway 380 (east of Teel Parkway and north of Panther Creek Parkway).

Two 18-hole championship courses are part of the development and scheduled to open in 2022.

Along with the PGA Championships, the PGA of America said the courses will host two KPMG Women’s PGA Championships and possibly a Ryder Cup (the earliest date for that would be 2040).

The 2027 PGA Championship will be the first time North Texas has held a men’s major event since the 1963 PGA Championship that Jack Nicklaus won at Dallas Athletic Club. The last time a men’s major was played in Texas was the 1969 U.S. Open at Houston’s Champions Golf Club.

Texas has only hosted six men’s major golf tournaments in the state’s history, including the 1941 U.S. Open at Colonial Country Club.

The reason golf’s biggest events have avoided Texas is because of the summer heat. The U.S. Open is played in mid-June, and the PGA Championship had been an August event for years. But the PGA Championship is moving to a May date in 2019, sandwiched between DFW’s two PGA Tour stops in the AT&T Byron Nelson at Dallas’ Trinity Forest Golf Club and the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial.

For Frisco, landing the PGA of America is another positive and another major sporting development. The city is home to the Dallas Cowboys’ practice facility, MLS’ FC Dallas and the Texas Rangers’ Double A affiliate Frisco Rough Riders. The PGA of America will initially employ at least 100 people.
