Find out how the 2018 PGA Tour helped Tarrant County. Hint: Think birdies

Military charities and nonprofits aimed at helping Tarrant County children were among recipients of the Colonial Country Club’s annual Birdies for Charity campaign which raised more than $14 million for the first time.

Local nonprofits secured pledges from friends and businesses for the annual PGA Tour event held at Colonial Country Club this year. Golf pros helped by making 1,396 birdies during the Fort Worth Invitational.

In the end, the effort raised more than $13.8 million — which was a large portion of the overall $14.8 million charity dollars raised.

“It is with great pride that we were able to support such important charity work in the Tarrant County area,” said Rob Hood, chairman of the Colonial Tournament, in a press release. “This was a big reason why the Fort Worth community came together this year to keep our tournament going. This component of our event cannot be overstated.”

Next year, the tournament will be called the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The tournament’s name has changed through the years, but the call to help others has remained. Programs assisted include camp scholarships for disabled, special needs or low-income children, college scholarships, mentoring programs and after school support services for homeless families.

Dollars raised through the Colonial program are also helping more veterans through the Military Warriors Support Foundation and Birdies for the Brave. Colonial has donated 14 homes to injured veterans in recent years, according to the press release.

“We are thankful to the many individuals and businesses who support our efforts and help us generate dollars for these community charities,” Colonial Country Club president Rob Doby said in a statement.
