Rockwall’s Rodney Webb named head football coach, athletic director at Denton Guyer
Rockwall’s Rodney Webb was named the next head football coach and athletic coordinator at Denton Guyer on Monday, becoming the second coach in program history.
He replaces John Walsh, who resigned his post on March 17.
“Coach Webb’s record of running an exemplary, student focused program makes him a great fit for our Wildcats,” said Joey Florence, Denton ISD Athletic Director. “He’s ready to step-in and continue the hardworking excellence we’ve come to expect from our programs at Guyer, both academically and athletically.”
Webb, who is the president of the Texas High School Coaches Association, has compiled a 141-77 record in 18 years with playoff appearances in 16 consecutive seasons.
Webb joined Rockwall in 2013 and led the Yellowjackets to their first playoff win in 22 years. He also had stints with Mesquite Horn, Royse City, Garland Naaman Forest, Austin Atkins, Elgin and Rudoso in New Mexico.
The Yellowjackets went 12-3 last season and reached the state semifinals for the first time since 1987.
Webb was a finalist for the Landry Award Coach of the Year in December. His star player, wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a 5-star prospect enrolled at Ohio State, won player of the year.
Walsh resigned after 14 seasons with the Wildcats. He posted a 131-56 record with two state championships (2012, 2013) and four state title game appearances.
The Wildcats went 14-2 in 2019 with a trip to the Class 6A Division 2 state title game, where they lost 24-0 to Austin Westlake. They had one of the top backfields in the state in junior QB and Texas A&M commit Eli Stowers and senior running back Kaedric Cobbs, who’s headed to UT-San Antonio.
