Three months after leading Guyer back to state, John Walsh resigns as football coach
The only head coach in Denton Guyer football history is leaving.
According to Reece Waddell of the Denton Record Chronicle, Walsh resigned Monday night after 14 seasons with the Wildcats. He posted a 131-56 record with two state championships and four state title game appearances.
In a statement obtained by the DRC, Walsh said “this has been an incredibly difficult time personally and for my family.”
Walsh’s full statement:
“This is not how I envisioned communicating to our Wildcat family. As most of you know, I do not have a social media platform. But due to COVID-19, I am not able to address you personally..
This statement is to notify you that Denton ISD administrators and myself have agreed to move in different directions. Therefore, I have resigned my position as head football coach and campus coordinator.
This has been an incredibly difficult time personally and for my family. Through these adverse times and changes we must be at our best. I have preached we grow more from failure than we do in prosperity, and I plan to grow during this tough time. It is my expectation for our players to be very resilient in this challenging time of change. I have all the confidence in you to respond like champions.
I walk away respecting the game I lived for, the school I cherish, and most importantly, the young me I love.”
Guyer was one of the best teams in the state when it went to three state title games in four years from 2010-13.
The Wildcats won their first title in 2012. After an 0-2 start to the season, they won 14 straight, including a 48-37 win over Georgetown in the 4A Division I final.
The Wildcats defended their title in 2013, again starting 0-2 before winning their final 14 games, capped off with a 31-14 win over San Antonio Brennan in the 4A D1 championship.
Guyer returned to the state title game in December (6A D2) with one of the top backfields in the state in junior QB and Texas A&M commit Eli Stowers and senior running back Kaedric Cobbs.
Unfortunately, Stowers sustained an injured knee in the first quarter and Guyer couldn’t recover, losing to Austin Westlake 24-0. Cobbs, however, went on to lead Dallas-Fort Worth 6A teams in rushing and won the 2020 Davey O’Brien high school scholarship award.
