Denton Guyer’s Kaedric Cobbs wins Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship Award

Denton Guyer senior running back Kaedric Cobbs was named the 34th Annual Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship award winner on Tuesday at the Fort Worth Club.

Cobbs, who is the first winner from Guyer, was awarded a $30,000 scholarship during the 13th Annual Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship Luncheon.

“A lot of people can get athletic awards, but an award like this that holds the prestige such as the Davey O’Brien award is really special to my family and I, so yes, it tops the awards for me,” he said.

“His support team at Denton Guyer is second to none,” said Guyer’s father, Bel. “He always says ‘we did it’ meaning the family, and he’s so immersed in the Denton ISD community, it’s important to him.”

The other four finalists, Highland Park’s Peyton Dooley, Fort Worth Trinity Valley’s Harper Dunne, Lake Highlands’ Osadolor Osawemwenze and JJ Pearce’s Adam Tobin, each received a $2,500 scholarship from the foundation.

“There was a little shock there, but you’re sitting with four other great humans, people, great athletes and the award could’ve gone to any of the five of us,” Cobbs said. “I’m just glad my name was called.”

Cobbs will be honored Feb. 17, at the 43rd Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner alongside Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award winner Joe Burrow of LSU, Legends Award recipient Steve Bartkowski, and the National Football Foundation, the winner of the Charles Ringler Founder’s Award.

“That’s exciting. I didn’t realize [Joe] was going to be there,” Cobbs said. “I’m looking forward to meeting him, shaking his hand and introducing myself to him.”

Cobbs ranks first in his class of 631 students with a perfect 5.0 grade-point average. A member of the National Honor Society, he also co-created and is president of the Men After God’s Own Heart organization.

“I have great support at home,” he said. “My parents did a great job raising me and making me really recognize the importance academics have.”

This season, Cobbs rushed 304 times for 2,641 yards (leading Dallas-Fort Worth) and scored 42 touchdowns, helping the Wildcats to a 14-2 record and trip to the Class 6A Division II state title game in December. He rushed for over 6,700 yards and 102 touchdowns in his high school career.

“I think one thing the world doesn’t see is the pressure he puts on himself to not let the community down,” said the elder Cobbs. “Kaedric is unique and he sets the standard very high for himself. We’re very happy and proud of him and the community he represents.”

He was voted to the Class 6A all-state first team and District 5-6A Co-Offensive MVP.

“People love the game, but it’s people around the game that make it special and that’s one thing I can say about the coaching staff at Denton Guyer,” Cobbs said. “They make the game so much fun and make you enjoy playing it. When you can enjoy the athletics and academics part, it comes easy to be successful in both of them.”
