Colleyville Heritage, which reached the state quarterfinals, had three players on the Class 5A Associated Press Sports Editors all-state team: senior offensive lineman Gavin Byers, senior defensive back Luke Mabe and senior punter Chase Allen.

“Pleased to see the group of guys on the team,” CHHS coach Joe Willis said. “Gavin dominated and is the best offensive lineman in the Metroplex. He was a no-brainer.”

The 3-star Byers signed his national letter of intent with Baylor on Wednesday.

“We appreciate Gavin for what he’s done as a player and leader,” Willis said. “He was tight end for us as a freshman and I told him I might move him to tackle as a sophomore and he just said ‘whatever I can do to make the team better’ and that’s the type of player he is. He’s a hard worker, three-sport athlete and does things the right way.”

Mabe posted 108 tackles, six for loss, with seven interceptions and 25 deflections in the regular season.

Allen averaged 45.3 yards on 26 punts with a long of 75. He pinned teams inside the 20 four times.

“It wasn’t a surprise about Luke. He’s been a good player for us. It was a breakout year for him. He started a couple games last season, but he did a great job developing himself in the summer. He was much more physical,” Willis said. “Chase was a first team punter, but could have easily been first team kicker, one of the best legs in the country especially on kickoffs.

Senior Matthew Powers was named honorable mention linebacker.

“Matt is a great story. Very undersized linebacker and first year on varsity. He didn’t start until the second week and did outstanding. Played every snap on defense during the playoffs and a very durable kid.”

Three from Crowley made first team: sophomore offensive lineman Vontrez Jackson, senior defensive lineman Evertt Preston and senior defensive back Bryson Bonds.

“Vontrez is the only sophomore to make the all-state team. Big young man and he busts his tail. Very proud of him,” Crowley coach JJ Resendez said. “His upside is incredible when you look at his production. You look at his numbers among the leaders in the state and it was an easy decision.”

Preston was a fierce defender for the 9-2 Eagles, recording 108 tackles, 23 for loss and 11 sacks in the regular season.

“He’s a bit undersized, but he played with such a motor,” Resendez said. “He’s active on the D-line and so athletic. He really came on his senior year and advanced from a role player to staying on the field for every defensive snap we had.”

Bonds, who signed his NLI with Indiana on Wednesday, makes the team for the second straight year. He was second team all-state last season. The 3-star safety made 115 tackles this year, 10 for loss, 15 deflections and recovered three fumbles.

“He’s like a coach on the field for us. He’ll make sure the defense is lined up right, he’s a smart kid,” Resendez said. “Not to mention, he loves to hit, he’s a big hitter and flies around the ball. He plays defense, returns kicks, does a little bit of everything for us.”

Overall, Crowley had six on the team with honorable mentions Dominique Johnson, Elijah Deering and Xavier Goynes.

“Shows we have quality young men who work hard. There’s a lot of talent in Crowley,” Resendez said. “We have kids who love to play football and can play with some of the best in the country. We’re just beginning to scratch the surface over here.”

Frisco Lone Star WR Marvin Mims was voted offensive player of the year. Mims, who signed with Oklahoma on Wednesday, finished the year with over 2,600 yards receiving, a state record for a single season. He also finished with the most receiving yards in a career in state history.

Burleson senior Klaus Shoenborn and Aledo senior Aidan Hayes were also named first team all state.

Here is a look at the Class 5A all-state football team, as voted by the media. Stats are based on regular season only.
