JD Coffey is one of the best 2021 high school football players in the country, with offers from Texas, Notre Dame and Florida, among his 18. He’s ranked as the No. 4 2021 safety in the nation and No. 28 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports.

He proves it on the field as the Kennedale 4-star safety was voted to the Class 4A Associated Press Sports Editors Texas all-state football team on Tuesday.

It’s Coffey’s second time on first team in three seasons. He was first team as a freshman in 2017.

“Not surprising. He’s that good,” Kennedale coach Richard Barrett said. “He’ll tell you he didn’t have a good year because he didn’t have seven or eight picks like the last two seasons, but he still made a huge impact. I think this has been his best year and he’s very deserving. They got this one right.”

Through the regular season, Coffey, who’s projected to commit with Texas, made 82 tackles, five for loss, two interceptions and six pass deflections. He picked up two sacks and scored on four touchdown returns.

“They tried to keep the ball away, but even then, he’s still a game changer,” Barrett said.

“I’m honored to receive this again,” Coffey added. “My hard work and dedication is being recognized and it’s truly a blessing.”

The Wildcats, who went 7-4 this season and won a district title, also got two all-state honorable mentions in sophomore linebacker Braden Waters and sophomore kicker Aiden Birr.

Both played on varsity for the first time this season.

“Braden was our leading tackler and is such a good player. He runs well and is a football junkie. He loves the game and is a great kid,” Barrett said. “By the time Aiden is a senior, he’s going to be one of the most highly recruited kickers in the country. He works hard and really, he’s only been kicking for a year. But he dedicates his time to kicking and getting better.”

Here is a look at the Class 4A all-state football team, as voted by the media. Stats are based on regular season only.
