Texas High School Football is back!

We missed those Friday (and Thursday) night lights. Here’s everything you need to know to stay informed about the 2022-2023 high school football season in the DFW area.


The 2022 Texas high school football season kicks off this week with season openers Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Fort Worth-area players and their teams look for success and a chance to play in December.

The Fort Worth-area is so loaded this season with top football players that we had to narrow it to 100.

Even that was difficult.

But without further ado, here is a look at the Top 100 players in 2022:

1. CB/RB Javien Toviano

Senior, 6-0, 185, Arlington Martin

Facts: The 5-star corner ranks as the fourth best senior corner in the country and seventh best player in Texas, according to the 247Sports composite. He holds 28 offers from a Power Five school and is down to Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Ohio State and Texas A&M.

2. DE Enow Etta

Senior, 6-5, 260, Colleyville Covenant

Commit: Michigan

Facts: The 4-star Etta is as good as advertised coming in as the 10th best senior defensive lineman in the country and the 12th best senior player overall in the state. He’s also No. 71 nationally by 247Sports. Etta is the preseason all-area defensive MVP. He led the area last season with 22 1/2 sacks and was second with 41 tackles for loss. During the past two seasons, Etta has posted 191 tackles and 40 sacks.

3. RB Owen Allen

Senior, 6-0, 200, Southlake Carroll

Facts: During his career, Allen has been voted with a district superlative every year. He was newcomer of the year as a freshman, offensive MVP as a sophomore and District 4-6A MVP last season as a junior. He has rushed for over 5,000 yards and 83 touchdowns in his career, including career-highs of 2,145 yards and 32 TDs last season as the Dragons went to the state semifinals.

4. OT Isaiah Robinson

Senior, 6-7, 290, Arlington Lamar

Commit: Baylor

Facts: The 4-star offensive tackle is among the top 2023s in the country, with a ranking of 101 overall. Among senior offensive tackles, Robinson is the 15th best and ranks as the 19th best senior player in the state.

5. QB Jake Strong

Senior, 6-2, 200, Justin Northwest

Commit: Texas Tech

Last season: 2,334 yards passing, 29 TDs, 918 yards rushing, 8 TDs

Facts: The 3-star Tech commit was voted district MVP in 2021, helping the Texans to a share of the district title. Strong enters with the eighth-most passing yards among 2022 area returners and has thrown for 58 TDs during the past two seasons. According to the 247Sports composite, Strong is the highest-ranked Fort Worth-area QB and second in DFW, only behind Denton Guyer’s Jackson Arnold.

6. TE Jaden Platt

Senior, 6-5, 235, Haslet Eaton

Commit: Stanford

Facts: Voted to have the best receiving season among Fort Worth-area players, Platt will be tough to cover all season long. He is a 4-star tight end and ranks as the fifth-best senior tight end in the country, and 16th best senior in the state by 247Sports. He had 18 offers before committing to Stanford in December. He made 31 catches for 623 yards and five touchdowns last season for the Eagles.

7. S Jamel Johnson

Senior, 6-1, 185, Arlington Seguin

Facts: The 4-star Johnson is committed to Texas. According to the 247Sports composite, Johnson ranks as the 14th best senior safety in the country and 36th best player in the state.

8. CB Jaden Allen

Junior, 5-10, 160, Aledo

Facts: Allen is among the top 2024 players in the nation and a one-time state champion. The 4-star Texas commit is rated as the 12th best junior corner and 23rd best in Texas, according to the 247Sports composite.

Facts: Jordan is a 4-star Texas Tech commit and ranks as the 19th best senior safety in the country and 45th best player in Texas.

10. S Jordan Sanford

Senior, 5-11, 185, Mansfield Timberview

Facts: The 4-star Sanford is set to join Jordan in the secondary in Lubbock after committing to Texas in early August. Among 2023s, he ranks as the 23rd best safety in the country and 46th best player in the state.

11. RB Landen Chambers

Senior, 5-11, 210, Keller Fossil Ridge

Commit: BYU

Facts: The 3-star back finished with the third-most rushing yards last season among 2022 returners and most yards per game at 176. Chambers ranks in the Top 100 senior running backs in the country. He hit the century mark in all 10 games and had 200 yards three times with a season-high of 236 yards.

12. LB S’Maje Burrell

Senior, 6-0, 215, North Crowley

Commit: Texas

Facts: The 3-star Longhorn commit ranks in the top 60 of the best senior linebackers in the country, by 247Sports. He’s also the 111th best senior player overall in the state. He had 26 offers before committing to UT. Burrell was district co-defensive MVP after having 104 tackles, 13 for loss, five sacks and four forced fumbles.

13. QB Kaden Anderson

Senior, 6-4, 205, Southlake Carroll

Commit: Wyoming

Last season: 3,036 yards passing, 34 TDs, 7 rushing TDs

Facts: Anderson was shuffled in at QB1 right away for the Dragons and never looked back, leading them to a state semifinal appearance. Among 2022 area returners, he threw for the third-most passing yards and was one of four QBs to throw for 30 TDs.

14. QB Weston Smith

Senior, 6-5, 215, Colleyville Heritage

Commit: Princeton

Last season: 2,608 yards pass, 29 TDs

Facts: Smith was named all-area offensive newcomer after helping the Panthers to another district title and deep playoff run. His 29 TD tosses are tied for fifth-most (with Strong) among 2022 area returners.

15. CB/WR LeVar Thornton Jr.

Senior, 6-2, 170, Keller Timber Creek

Facts: The two-way athlete starred for the Falcons’ defense last season with three interceptions. Thornton is a 3-star Baylor commit and ranks in the Top 100 best seniors in the state.

16. S Landyn Cleveland

Junior, 6-1, 190, Mansfield Legacy

Facts: The 3-star prospect is ranked as the 36th best junior safety in the country and 61st best player in Texas, according to the 247Sports composite. He had 104 tackles and one interception last season. Cleveland holds 12 offers, which include TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor.

17. DE/TE Riley Van Poppel

Senior, 6-4, 270, Argyle

Commit: Nebraska

Facts: The 3-star athlete was the district utility player of the year in 2021 after seeing time on the D-line as well as tight end and half-back. On the line, Van Poppel made over 40 tackles and eight sacks for the Eagles. He ranks as the 60th best senior player in the state. He’s father, Todd, was an MLB pitcher for more than 10 years.

18. WR Chris Palfreeman

Senior, 5-9, 160, Fort Worth All Saints

Commit: Texas Tech

Facts: The 3-star Tech commit played running back at Brock in 2020 before making the move to All Saints last season, where he had 57 catches for 890 yards. He averaged 80 yards per game and over 15 yards per catch.

19. WR Lonnie Johnson

Senior, 6-3, 205, Keller Timber Creek

Commit: SMU

Facts: One of the taller receivers in the area, the 3-star Johnson is among the leading returners in touchdown catches with 11 in 2021. He made 62 catches for 854 yards.

20. DE Kaleb James

Senior, 6-4, 250, Mansfield

Commit: Arkansas

Facts: The 3-star James shined at Nolan Catholic during the past thee seasons before making the leap to Mansfield. He ranks in the top 100 among both senior linemen in the country and players in the state. Last season at Nolan, James had 110 tackles, 25 for loss and 15 sacks.

21. TE Lafayette Kaiuway

Senior, 6-5, 245, Arlington Sam Houston

Commit: TCU

Facts: Kaiuway had only 27 catches last season, but still managed to have nine touchdowns. His nine touchdowns were among the most for any tight end in the area in 2021. He also averaged well over 10 yards per reception for the Texans. He had 24 offers, some of which from the best programs in the country, before committing to TCU in May. According to 247Sports, Kaiuway is a 3-star TE and is the 26th best senior TE in the country and 71st best senior in the state.

22. OL Wes Tucker

Senior, 6-5, 260, Argyle

Commit: Baylor

Facts: The 3-star Tucker gets to join Robinson in Waco after choosing the Bears this summer. He will be a big factor for the offense if the Eagles want to compete in Class 5A for the first time. Tucker is the No. 44 senior inside lineman in the country.

23. OL Andre Cojoe

Senior, 6-6, 330, Mansfield Timberview

Commit: Texas

Facts: Cojoe is a load up front and will make it hard for any defender to get around. The 3-star Longhorn commit blocked for 1,500-yard rusher Jarvis Reed last season. He ranks in the top 100 among senior inside linemen, by 247Sports.

24. RB Deago Benson

Senior, 6-0, 200, Midlothian

Commit: Washington

Facts: The 3-star Benson had 10 offers before committing to Washington in July. He ranks in the Top 100 senior running backs in the country. He rushed for 1,200 yards and 14 TDs last season. Benson rushed for 800 yards and six TDs as a sophomore in 2020.

25. LB Poasa Utu

Senior, 6-0, 205, Kennedale

Commit: Oklahoma State

Facts: The 3-star Utu ranks in the top 100 of the best senior linebackers in the country. He finished last season with 97 tackles and was No. 1 in the area with 41 tackles for loss. He was also second in the area with 19 sacks.

26. S Chapman Lewis

Senior, 6-1, 170, Burleson Centennial

Facts: Tech has a third area defensive back as Lewis is a 3-star Red Raider commit. He announced in January. He is among the leading tacklers for any position, finishing 2021 with 138, 12 for loss and two interceptions.

27. CB Diesel Gordon

Senior, 5-11, 170, Arlington Seguin

Facts: Gordon is a 3-star Washington commit and adds another lethal weapon in the Seguin secondary along with Johnson. Among 2023s, he ranks in the Top 10 corners in the country.

28. DE Legend Journey

Junior, 6-2, 250, Mansfield Summit

Facts: Last year’s all-area defensive newcomer of the year excelled for the Jaguars as the team went to their second straight state semifinal. Journey made 72 tackles, 29 for loss and had nine sacks. He holds eight offers.

29. WR Amarion Henry

Senior, 6-0, 185, Keller

Facts: Henry holds offers from Air Force, Army and Navy. He helped the Indians to a 5-0 start last season and playoff appearance. Among 2022 area returners, Henry ranks second in touchdown catches (14), second in receiving yards per game (112), second in yards (1,229) and first in catches (78).

30. WR/S Landon Ransom-Goelz

Senior, 6-0, 165, Byron Nelson

Commit: Rice

Facts: L.R.G is among the leading returning receivers in all of Texas. Among 2022 Fort Worth-area returners, he is third in catches (75), first in yards (1,428), third in receiving yards per game (110) and second in touchdown catches (14).

31. OT Drew Perez

Senior, 6-8, 330, Southlake Carroll

Commit: Colorado

Facts: The 3-star Perez is among the biggest linemen in the country as he helped the Dragons to the state semifinals last season. He helped anchor a line that blocked for the area’s top running back and 2,000-yard rusher Owen Allen. Allen returns so expect another big load thanks to Perez and the boys up front.

32. S Kameron Sallis

Senior, 6-0, 190, Kennedale

Facts: The 3-star Sallis committed to Kansas State this summer. He was among the area leaders in 2021 with four interceptions, and added 47 tackles for the Wildcats.

33. LB/DE Trey Wilson

Senior, 6-3, 240, LD Bell

Facts: 247Sports lists Wilson as a 3-star linebacker, but he’s also an edge rusher as the recruiting site ranks him as the 46th best senior edge rusher in the country. Wilson is also No. 88 overall in the state. He holds four offers and received a medal in the shot put at the state track meet.

34. DE Ricky Lolohea

Senior, 6-3, 280, Euless Trinity

Commit: Oklahoma State

Facts: The 3-star OSU commit is an absolute beast with a big frame. He will be match-up nightmare with opposing offensive linemen. He ranks in the top 125 among all senior defensive linemen in the country, by 247Sports.

35. S Logan Anderson

Senior, 5-11, 180, Southlake Carroll

Facts: Anderson was all-area defensive newcomer of the year in 2020 after helping the Dragons to the state championship game. Last season, he made 73 tackles, 51 solo tackles and had three interceptions.

36. LB/RB Davhon Keys

Junior, 6-1, 215, Aledo

Facts: The 3-star Keys plays running back and linebacker for the Bearcats, who reached the third round of the playoffs. Last season on defense, he made 72 tackles, eight for loss, three sacks, four interceptions and two touchdown returns. Keys has 12 offers, including from Arkansas, Baylor, LSU and Oklahoma State.

37. S Adrian Wilson

Senior, 6-1, 185, Keller Central

Commit: Colorado

Facts: The 3-star Wilson had 10 offers before committing to Colorado in April. He is among the top 100 of the best senior safeties in the country, by 247Sports.

38. QB Jake Wilson

Senior, 6-2, 200, Byron Nelson

Last season: 3,884 yards passing, 38 TDs

Facts: Wilson had a career year as he was named district offensive MVP and helped the Bobcats to the third round for the first time. He finished 2021 with the most passing yards in the area (over 500 yards more than the next QB), the most per game (299) and was tied for second most TD passes.

Senior, 5-10, 200, Boswell

Facts: Carter finished with the fourth-most rushing yards among 2022 returners. He also had the fifth-most rushing yards per game (142) and seventh most touchdown runs (18).

40. K/P Tyler White

Senior, 6-5, 200, Southlake Carroll

Commit: Texas A&M

Facts: White, who helped the Dragons to a state baseball championship in the spring, is the top-ranked punter among the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports. White made 79 of 81 extra points and 10 of 12 field goals with a long of 55 yards. As a punter, he averaged 42 yards per punt and had 21 punts inside the 20.

41. WR Kelby Valsin

Senior, 6-1, 180, Arlington Bowie

Commit: Texas Tech

Facts: Valsin has the most offers among Fort Worth-area receivers with 24 before committing with the Red Raiders this summer. Despite Bowie’s struggles in 2021, Valsin had a nice year with 49 catches, 831 yards and eight touchdowns. He is a 3-star WR according to 247Sports.

42. RB Jarvis Reed

Senior, 6-0, 185, Mansfield Timberview

Facts: Reed was a first-team all-district running back after helping the Wolves to the third round of the playoffs last season. Reed had nearly 1,500 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns. He had eight games with 100 or more yards and also averaged 10 yards per catch.

Facts: If Martin expects any success this season, it starts up front with Saina, who’s one of the best 2024s in the country. 247Sports ranks him as the 16th best junior inside lineman and 43rd best junior overall in the state. He has 10 offers, including from Baylor, Nebraska and Oklahoma State.

Facts: Standing right behind Saina on the 2024 chart is Cruz, who highlights the Royals’ front line. Cruz is 17th and 44th, respectively, according to 247Sports, just one spot behind the Martin junior. He holds 20 offers, including from Arkansas, Baylor, Ohio State and Oklahoma.

Facts: Snider is a 3-star back that holds 22 offers, which include Nebraska, Auburn and Baylor. Snider is also ranked as a Top 100 running back in the country by 247Sports. Listed as an all-purpose back, he had over 220 touches during the past two seasons, which include 188 rushes and 41 catches. He rushed for 11 touchdowns for the Warriors last season.

Facts: Madrie and Van Poppel are going to be trouble for whoever plays Argyle this season. The 3-star Madrie had 15 offers before committing this summer. He was district defensive MVP last season with 50 tackles and six sacks.

Facts: The 3-star Rice commit shined for the Chargers’ defense in 2021 where he made 50 tackles, 12 for loss and nine sacks.

Facts: Finley is a preseason all-area defender after finishing 2021 with the third-most tackles for loss among 2022 area returners (27), third in sacks (18) and fourth in hurries (28).

Senior, 5-10, 180, Brock

Facts: Brewster is a two-way star for the Eagles, who reached the state championship game in December. On defense, Brewster made 123 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, five sacks and was among the area’s best with six interceptions.

Facts: The son of former MLB all-star Vernon Wells, Christian makes the move to Southwest Christian after spending the last three seasons with Colleyville Covenant, helping the Cougars win a TAPPS state title in 2020. A multi-sport star (he also plays basketball, baseball and runs track), Wells played quarterback, receiver and defensive back for Covenant. Last season, he passed for 754 yards and 13 touchdowns, rushed for 409 yards and 12 touchdowns, caught 41 passes for 900 yards and 10 touchdowns, and made 46 tackles and two interceptions.

Facts: Guerra led the Indians to a 5-0 start in 2021 and ultimately a playoff berth. He was voted by the fans this summer to have the best season among Fort Worth-area quarterbacks.

Last season: 2,276 yards passing, 19 TDs, 1,055 yards rushing, 16 TDs

Facts: Brown led the Jaguars to the second round of the playoffs in 2021. Heritage moves up to Class 5A for the first time and if the team wants to prove doubters wrong, it will start with the dual-threat QB, who had the second-most rushing yards by a QB among 2022 returners.

58. WR Max Allbritton

Senior, 5-11, 170, Keller Timber Creek

Facts: Allbritton is a part of a loaded receiving core at Timber Creek along with Lonnie Johnson and LeVar Thornton Jr. He had the second-most catches among 2022 returners (76), fifth-most yards per game (101) and seventh in total yards (905).

59. S Carson Finney

Junior, 6-1, 170, Brock

Facts: Finney was a first-team all-district safety after helping the the Eagles to the state championship game. Finney made 78 tackles and started all 16 games. He had nine deflections and was among the area’s leaders with six interceptions.

60. RB Gary Maddox

Senior, 5-10, 160, Euless Trinity

Facts: It’s finally Maddox’s time to shine in the Trinity back field after waiting behind last year’s all-area offensive MVP Ollie Gordon, who’s now at Oklahoma State. Despite Gordon’s workload, Maddox managed to rush for 700 yards each of the past two seasons. Last season, he averaged seven yards per carry. That average was nine in 2020, which included 10 touchdowns. With a big offensive line, the ceiling is high for Maddox.

Commit: BYU

Facts: The 3-star Davis starred at Nolan Catholic last season before making the transfer to Heritage. 247Sports ranks Davis as the 44th best senior tight end in the country. He’s also in the top 150 of the best 2023s in the state.

64. LB/RB Cap Mooney

Senior, 6-1, 210, Aledo

Facts: Mooney and Keys make up a dynamic duo at the linebacker core for the Bearcats. Mooney helped Aledo to a state championship, its 10th, during the 2020 season where he was voted state championship game defensive MVP. Last season, he had 62 tackles and 14 tackles for loss.

Facts: The 3-star tackle ranks in the top 125 for all senior tackles in the country, by 247Sports. Reed will play a big part in the Rangers offense in 2022 and is coming off his commitment to UNT at the end of July.

68. QB Ryan Clark

Senior, 6-2, 240, Weatherford

Last season: 1,474 yards passing, 14 TDs, 1,001 yards rushing, 20 TDs

Facts: Clark was voted district offensive MVP a season ago after coming in second among all area quarterbacks with 20 touchdowns on the ground. The Kangaroos made the playoffs for the third straight season and hosted a postseason game for the first time.

Facts: Dorris was voted to have the best season among Fort Worth-area linebackers in 2022. Last season for the Hornets, he made 70 tackles, 10 for loss and three sacks.

Senior, 5-10, 185, Glen Rose

Last season: 1,545 yards passing, 11 TDs, 1,862 yards rushing, 30 TDs

Facts: White was the obvious district MVP in 2021 after finishing with the most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns by an QB in the area, and is the MVP favorite this fall. Among 2022 returners, he ranks second in rushing yards, TDs and rushing yards per game (155).

71. RB Antwuan Polk

Senior, 6-0, 220, Fort Worth Southwest Christian

Facts: Polk enters the 2022 season as the top running back among Fort Worth-area private school teams. The Eagles went 10-3 and reached the state semifinals last season and Polk was a big reason why after rushing for over 1,600 yards and 27 touchdowns.

72. DT Ansel Din-Mbuh

Senior, 6-2, 270, Aledo

Facts: The multi-sport star exploded on the recruiting scene this summer and has picked up nine offers, including from Washington and Air Force. Last season, Din-Mbuh made 50 tackles and three sacks. He also made deep postseason runs in both track and wrestling.

73. DE/LB Grant Mirabal

Senior, 6-2, 235, Argyle

Facts: Mirabal adds another weapon on the Eagles’ defense, which will be the strength of team this fall. He’s made 90 tackles in back-to-back seasons for coach Todd Rodgers’ squad.

74. OL Lajuan Owens

Senior, 6-4, 345, Keller Fossil Ridge

Commit: Tulane

Facts: Owens anchors a line that blocked for star running back Landen Chambers, who rushed for 1,700 yards and 25 touchdowns. Chambers comes into 2022 as the second best back in the area. Owens ranks in the top 150 among senior inside linemen in the country.

75. QB/ATH Hauss Hejny

Junior, 6-0, 175, Aledo

Facts: Hejny is expected to be slotted at QB1 for coach Tim Buchanan. Last year, he saw snaps at multiple positions and was named district newcomer of the year. He threw for three touchdowns and had 648 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

76. OL Peni Masima

Junior, 6-0, 300, Euless Trinity

Facts: Trinity is known for two things, its run game and its big offensive line. The Trojans were among the best rushing attacks in 2021 led by all-area MVP Ollie Gordon, who’s now in Stillwater. But expect the run game to not miss a beat and it’ll start up front with the junior Masima.

77. OL Jake Hall

Senior, 6-3, 285, Southlake Carroll

Facts: A big reason Owen Allen rushed for over 2,000 yards and 30 touchdowns, Perez and Hall up front. Hall was an all-area lineman last season. He holds eight offers, which includes Army, Sam Houston State and Texas State.

78. LB/DE De’Sean Wells

Senior, 6-2, 190, Arlington Lamar

Facts: The Lamar defense should improve in 2022 and will once again be led by Wells, who had 50 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 11 sacks.

79. LB/S Corey Thompson

Senior, 6-0, 200, Mansfield Lake Ridge

Facts: Coach Kirk Thor’s team only returns four defensive returners, but will be led by Thompson, who had 55 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.

Facts: Owens was a force for the Eaton defense with 60 tackles and 11 sacks.

Facts;: Welch was a second-team offensive lineman last season after helping the Bullfrogs to nine wins and a playoff win.

Senior, 5-8, 175, Grapevine

Facts: The Mustangs enjoyed a district championship and a trip to the regional semifinals. Polk was a huge part of their success with over 1,000 yards of offense and 19 touchdowns.

Junior, 6-2, 185, FW Wyatt

Facts: Barrett is the best quarterback for Fort Worth ISD this season. He threw for over 3,000 yards and 35 touchdowns for the Chaparrals.

Facts: Cummings led the Texans’ rushing attack with nearly 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns, and helped the program to a district title season. He averaged nearly 100 yards per game on the ground and 11 yards per catch. He went over the century mark in four games.

Facts: Tompkins, who had 60 tackles for the regional semifinalist, holds offers from Air Force and Davidson.

Facts: The Greyhounds enjoyed a playoff season in just their second year at the varsity level. Gilbert, along with McElroy, are stars on both sides. Gilbert rushed for 15 touchdowns, caught five scores and made 85 tackles, three sacks and three interceptions.

Senior, 6-3, 200, Glen Rose

Facts: Among 2022 area returners, McKenzie ranks second with 146 tackles. He also had 10 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Facts: Magee helped the Texans to a district championship in 2021. He finished with 90 tackles and two sacks.

Facts: English was among the best receivers in the Metroplex with over 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also had three interceptions in the Zebras’ secondary.

90. QB Sawyer Farr

Junior, 6-4, 175, Boswell

Facts: Farr is also the school’s starting shortstop. On the football field, Farr has played since freshman year. Last season, Farr had 1,900 yards passing and 15 touchdowns. Boswell won a playoff game in 2021.
