Brian Gosset’s top dozen games to watch among Fort Worth-area teams in 2022
Ranking the Top 100 Fort Worth-area high school football players during the 2022 season
The Fort Worth-area high school football schedule this fall is jam-packed with state-ranked teams and title contenders. Five of the Top 12 are season openers in Week 1.
Despite a loaded 2022, we managed to narrow it down to a dozen.
Here are the Top 12 games to watch among Fort Worth-area teams this season:
7 p.m., Collins Complex, Week 9 (Oct. 21)
Two of the longest district winning streaks go at it in Week 9. Not only will it extend one streak, but this game will be for the district championship. Aledo (No. 3 in Class 5A Division 1) has the nation’s longest at over 100 games.
But Ryan (No. 2 in 5A D1) has a little more firepower, Give me Ryan, 35-27.
2. Austin Lake Travis vs. Arlington Martin
7 p.m., Choctaw Stadium, Week 1 (Aug. 25)
A heavyweight match up between two of the top teams kicks off the season. Lake Travis, which beat Martin in last year’s season opener, 40-28, is No. 7 in Class 6A. Martin is No. 15.
Martin seeks revenge. Give me Martin, 34-28.
3. Brock vs. Wimberley
7:30 p.m., McLane Stadium, Week 3 (Sept. 9)
Brock, state runner-up last season and the No. 1 team in Class 3A D1, opens the season with three Top-7 teams in 4A D2, including Wimberley (No. 7).
Brock will be too much for Wimberley. Give me the Eagles, 35-24.
4. Allen vs. Arlington Martin
7 p.m. Choctaw Stadium, Week 3 (Sept. 9)
Martin’s non-district schedule is among the best in the state. In Week 3, the Warriors get a visit from the Allen Eagles (No. 13 in 6A)
Allen wins this one though. Give me the Eagles, 21-18.
5. Prosper vs. Euless Trinity
7 p.m., Pennington Field, Week 1 (Aug. 25)
Another headliner in Week 1 features the Prosper Eagles and Trinity Trojans. The Eagles are pass heavy while Trinity loves to run led by its big offensive line.
Trinity edges Prosper. Give me the Sipi Tau, 27-24.
6. Melissa vs. Argyle
7:30 p.m. Eagle Stadium, Week 1 (Aug. 26)
Another top season opener features a rematch from last year where Melissa stunned Argyle to a 21-0 shutout defeat. That doesn’t happen to Argyle often.
Argyle won’t let that happen again. Give me Arygle, 35-24.
7. Southlake Carroll vs. Flower Mound Marcus
7 p.m., Marcus, Week 2 (Sept. 2)
Both the Carroll Dragons and Marcus Marauders are predicted to win district and could meet in the playoffs later this fall. Marcus won eight games last season while Carroll went to the state semifinals.
Carroll with the win. Give me the Dragons, 42-28.
8. Burleson Centenial vs. Burleson
7:30 p.m., Burleson ISD Stadium, Week 1 (Aug. 26)
The Elks rolled in last year’s Battle of the Boot, snapping the Spartans’ three-game win streak in the series. Now the series is even at 5-5.
Centennial edges Burleson this year. Give me Sparty, 34-30.
9. Grandview vs. Glen Rose
7:30 p.m., Glen Rose, Week 1 (Aug. 26)
Another match up between the state’s best is the Glen Rose Tigers (No. 8 in 4A D2) and the Grandview Zebras (No. 6 in 3A D1). Both are predicted to win their district. Glen Rose rolled last year, 54-24.
But this one will be closer. Still give me the Tigers, 42-34.
10. Byron Nelson vs. Keller
7 p.m., Keller ISD Stadium, Week 8 (Oct. 14)
The Bobcats will visit the Indians in a District 4-6A showdown. The winner will come out as district runner-up behind Southlake Carroll with a possible home playoff game, depending on enrollment.
It’s a quarterback battle between Jake Wilson and Tre Guerra. Give me Byron, 38-28.
11. Azle vs. Justin Northwest
7 p.m., Northwest ISD Stadium, Week 6 (Sept. 30)
There was a lot on the line in last year’s season finale between the Hornets and Northwest. Azle pulled it out, 39-36, to force a three-way district championship.
Northwest has the better quarterback. Give me Northwest, 28-24.
12. Crowley vs. North Crowley
7:30 p.m., Crowley ISD Stadium, Week 11 (Nov. 3)
For the first time, the two Crowley schools will play a district football game against each other and they get to do it at the new Crowley ISD Stadium.
North Crowley will win this one. Give me the Panthers, 27-20.
