Former TCU women’s basketball stars Hailey Van Lith and Marta Suarez didn’t have to wait long to sign with new WNBA teams after being released earlier this week.
Van Lith was claimed off waivers by the Connecticut Sun, while Suarez signed a developmental contract with the Phoenix Mercury.
Another former TCU standout, guard Taylor Bigby, was waived by the Sun hours before they claimed Van Lith.
Van Lith, a 5-foot-9 guard, was the No. 11 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft after helping lead the Horned Frogs to their first Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. She averaged 17.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.2 steals to earn Big 12 Player of the Year.
Van Lith averaged 3.5 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 12.4 minutes per game in her rookie season with the Chicago Sky.
Suarez, a 6-3 forward, was selected No. 16 overall by the Seattle Storm in the second round of April’s draft, then was traded to the Golden State Valkyries minutes later.
Her developmental deal with the Mercury allows Suarez to work with the team while not counting against the 12-player roster limit. She can play in up to 12 games this season.
Suarez transferred to TCU from Cal for her final collegiate season, and she made the most of it. She averaged a career-high 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds and shot a career-best 37% from 3, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors. The Horned Frogs repeated as Big 12 regular-season champions and reached a second straight Elite Eight.
The 6-1 Bigby was selected in the third round (No. 37 overall) in April’s draft by the expansion Portland Fire, then was traded to the Sun. She averaged a career-high 8.2 points per game and shot 38.9% from 3 for TCU last season.
