TCU forward taken in WNBA draft, then immediately traded

TCU forward Marta Suarez is headed to the Golden State Valkyries.

Suarez was selected No. 16 overall by the Seattle Storm in the second round of the WNBA draft Monday in New York City, then minutes later was traded to the Valkyries.

“I’m just happy to be here. I’m excited to be here,” Suarez said to ESPN reporter Holly Rowe. “I’m extremely thankful for [TCU coach Mark Campbell] and the opportunity he’s given me. I’m very excited about tonight as well with my best friends. I just want to hoop, Holly.”

Suarez was one of a record three TCU players selected Monday. Guard Olivia Miles went No. 2 overall to the Minnesota Lynx, and guard Taylor Bigby was taken by the expansion Portland Fire in the third round (No. 37 overall) before being traded to the Connecticut Sun.

Suarez was one of the breakout stars in college basketball after transferring to Fort Worth for her senior season from California.

Suarez averaged a career-high 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds and shot a career-best 37% from 3. Suarez earned first team All-Big 12 honors as she helped the Horned Frogs win the regular-season Big 12 title and make a second straight trip to the Elite Eight.

The 6-foot-3 forward from Spain began her career at Tennessee in 2020, spending two seasons with the Volunteers before transferring to California in 2023.

Suarez started every game in her two seasons with the Golden Bears, averaging 11.9 points her first season and 12.9 in her second.

Playing with Miles helped unlock Suarez’s versatile offensive game, as the forward showcased the ability to score in the paint with her strength and craftiness. Suarez can also handle the ball in spots, but it was her growth as a 3-pointer shooter that helped her become a first-round pick.

Suarez’s previous best shooting year was in 2024-25 when she shot just 31.5% on four attempts per game, but she increased her percentage significantly while also taking six 3s a game for TCU.

With the ability to play power forward or a small-ball center, Suarez has a number of ways she can impact the game early on in her career.

As she heads back to the Bay Area, Suarez will join a Golden State squad that has a passionate fan base. The Valkyries went 23-21 in their first season and reached the first round of the WNBA playoffs.
