TCU defensive coordinator Andy Avalos has agreed to a contract extension, the Star-Telegram confirmed Thursday.
Terms of the extension were not disclosed.
“My family and I are just grateful to be a part of this university,” Avalos said Thursday. “We’re thankful for the leadership here, for our AD [athletic director] and our head coach and the direction we’re going with this program, and getting to be around these players every single day and this university means a lot to us.
“We’re grateful for the opportunity to be here, for the time to come in the future and help build this thing and do the best we can each and every day.”
Avalos was hired in December 2023 to replace former defensive coordinator Joe Gillespie. Gillespie was known for running a 3-3-5 defense, but the Horned Frogs shifted to more of a 4-2-5 scheme under Avalos that has worked wonders.
Avalos helped TCU produce back-to-back nine-win seasons. In his first season in 2024, TCU improved its scoring defense and ranked third in the Big 12 in passing defense. Avalos’ scheme also saw TCU improve its ability to get after the quarterback, as the Horned Frogs produced 26 sacks to finish in the top five in the conference.
Last season the Horned Frogs took another leap, as they ranked in the top 30 nationally in turnovers forced with 21 and also improved their run defense to rank fifth in the Big 12.
TCU had four defensive players earn All-Big 12 honors last year: linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr, safeties Jamel Johnson and Bud Clark and edge rusher Devean Deal.
Avalos previously served as the head coach at Boise State before coming to TCU.
