One of the most controversial moments from TCU’s 81-58 defeat to No. 1 overall seed Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday was a technical foul assessed to head coach Jamie Dixon.
With 8:57 remaining in the game, TCU trailed 59-50 and junior guard Tanner Toolson had his shot blocked by a Duke player. It appeared to be goaltending, and Dixon got confirmation from one member of his coaching staff who reviewed the footage on a tablet.
When Dixon voiced his displeasure about the call, he quickly was hit with the tech. Dixon was adamant after the game that he said nothing disrespectful to the official.
“I didn’t get set off,” Dixon said. “I had a conversation with him. There was no raising of the voice. There was a conversation, as he had asked for. ... Everybody knows what it was. What can you say?”
The game slipped away from the Horned Frogs from there, as Duke quickly went on a 15-2 run after the call.
“It’s a big play, and then you compound it,” Dixon said. “I didn’t cuss. I didn’t say anything bad. I had a conversation with him. It’s big. It had a huge impact on the game.”
Along with the technical foul, TCU also dealt with foul trouble, as third-team All-Big 12 forward Xavier Edmonds fouled out after playing just two minutes in the second half. The junior center’s fifth foul came on a controversial double-flagrant-one foul with Duke center Patrick Ngongba.
Sophomore forward David Punch, TCU’s leading scorer, was also hit in the face multiple times and was bleeding from his lips and nose in the first half. Only one of the blows earned a foul, a flagrant-one on star Duke freshman forward Cameron Boozer.
Duke shot 23 free throws in the game, while TCU finished with 10.
