TCU quarterback Josh Hoover intends to enter the transfer portal, the Star-Telegram learned Thursday night.
ESPN reporter Pete Thamel was the first to report the move.
Hoover will not play in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30 against USC, according to the source.
“I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to represent TCU for an incredible 4 years,” Hoover said in a statement posted to social media. “It has been a dream to be able to play and graduate from this university and I will forever be grateful for that.
“I want to thank Coach [Sonny] Dykes for giving me the opportunity to play at TCU. ... I’ve prayed about this and decided that I will be entering the transfer portal.”
There had been speculation Hoover would possibly enter the portal after he turned down a lucrative offer from Tennessee during the spring.
Hoover’s decision to enter the portal comes after offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, who served as TCU’s play-caller from 2023 until the end of this season, departed for South Carolina two weeks ago.
The Horned Frogs hired UConn’s Gordon Sammis to replace Briles, but Sammis’ pro-style offense apparently wasn’t enough to keep Hoover in Fort Worth.
Hoover started 31 games in three seasons, including each game the past two seasons. Hoover took over the starting job midway through the 2023 season when Chandler Morris went down with a knee injury against Iowa State on Oct. 7, 2023.
In 2024 Hoover guided TCU to a 9-4 record while breaking the school’s single-season record for passing yards with 3,949. Hoover also threw 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions that season.
Hoover entered this season with high expectations, but his development stagnated a bit as he still struggled with turnovers. Hoover led the Big 12 interceptions with 13, but still threw for 3,472 yards and a career-high 29 touchdowns as TCU finished 8-4.
Hoover ends his career in Fort Worth with 9,629 yards, 71 touchdowns and 33 interceptions.
No. 1-ranked Indiana is one team likely to be in the mix for Hoover. Hoover previously committed to the Hoosiers in high school before ultimately flipping to TCU when Dykes left SMU for Fort Worth.
The Hoosiers will have a lucrative offer waiting for their next quarterback as they must replace Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner and likely No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.
As for the future, TCU has freshman quarterback Adam Schobel slated to return next season and also signed three-star quarterback Jack Daulton in the 2026 recruiting class.
Senior quarterback Ken Seals could be in line to start the bowl game. He has attempted six passes this season, but has plenty of experience from his time as a starter at Vanderbilt from 2020-23.
