TCU basketball notebook: David Punch will return to Fort Worth for sophomore season
Promising freshman forward David Punch informed the Star-Telegram on Wednesday, April 2, that he’ll return to TCU next season.
The 6-foot-7 big man had a solid debut season as he started 27 of 32 games and showcased plenty of potential on both ends of the court.
Punch was an aggressive rebounder on the offensive glass and by the end of the season he was beginning to knock down long range jump shots.
On defense, Punch showed signs of being a top notch rim protector while also taking strides in his perimeter defense on opposing wings. Punch averaged 6.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in just 20 minutes per game.
The timing was also perfect for TCU as the Horned Frogs just saw starting center Ernest Udeh enter the portal earlier this week. With Punch’s return, TCU will now build around him, Micah Robinson, Jace Posey and Malick Diallo along with incoming Duncanville standout Kayden ‘Bugg’ Edwards.
The Horned Frogs also signed Iowa transfer point guard Brock Harding last week.
Women’s basketball loses reserve to portal
Reserve guard K’Nisha Godfrey became the first TCU women’s basketball to enter the transfer portal on Wednesdsay.
Godfrey was recruited by former head coach Raegan Pebley and transferred to TCU during the 2021-22 season. After sitting that year out, Godfrey started 12 games in 2022, averaging 4.4 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.
Godfrey redshirted in 2023 and then appeared in 15 games this season for the Horned Frogs, averaging less than two points per game. Godfrey was a positive presence in the locker room, but it would’ve been tough for her to find a bigger role next season with TCU returning Donovyn Hunter and Maddie Scherr.
