TCU starting safety Jamel Johnson intends to enter transfer portal

TCU football is losing a significant piece of its defense to the transfer portal.

Starting safety Jamel Johnson announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal on social media Tuesday afternoon. According to On3 Sports, Johnson’s name, image and likeness agent Noah Reisenfield informed the publication Johnson was entering the transfer portal.

Johnson retweeted the post from his personal Twitter page. The former Arlington Seguin standout had a breakout season for TCU in his first season as a starter.

The former four-star recruit had 71 tackles, three passes defended and a forced fumble this season. He rapidly improved from the beginning of the season and had multiple games with 11 tackles. As a freshman Johnson had 19 tackles.

Johnson is the third Horned Frog to announce his intentions to enter the transfer portal joining linebackers Shad Banks and Terrence Cooks Jr. While Banks and Cooks were mostly reserves, Johnson’s loss is significant due to his production and potential.

TCU landed a commitment from junior college safety Kollin Collier on Monday which may help lessen the blow.
