TCU linebacker Shad Banks plans to enter transfer portal

Hours after the Horned Frogs’ win over Cincinnati, TCU linebacker Shad Banks announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sunday that he intends to enter the transfer portal.

“I will be entering the transfer portal on Dec. 9th,” Banks said on his social media page. Banks transferred to TCU in 2021 from Texas A&M as a blue chip recruit.

Banks led the Horned Frogs in tackles for loss last season with 8.5 and he was third on the team in tackles with 62 in Joe Gillespie’s old defense. The Horned Frogs hired Andy Avalos last December and went to a different scheme.

Avalos’ scheme was four down front with two linebackers on the field compared to three under Gillespie.

Banks was limited in during preseason and then suffered an injury in the season opener against Stanford. He recorded just two tackles this season against Stanford and Texas Tech.

Banks became a fan favorite during his time in Fort Worth, partially for his pedigree coming from Houston-area powerhouse North Shore where he won multiple state championships. In 2021 it was Banks that caught the game-saving interception to keep rival Baylor out of the College Football Playoff.

In 2022 Banks was a key reserve during TCU’s run to the national championship game and he started in the Big 12 championship game where he finished with 10 tackles. In four seasons Banks totaled 113 tackles (80 solo), two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.
