All the shocks and surprises from Friday night football games for Week 1

Without bands or cheerleaders in tow, the Euless Trinity and Southlake Carroll football teams ran into trouble north of the Red River.

After a slow start, the Carroll Dragons eventually picked up steam against Broken Arrow and won, but the Trinity Trojans were never really in their 38-7 loss Friday to Tulsa Union.

It was the lowest scoring game for Trinity since its 10-6 loss to Carroll in a 2014 district contest and the most lopsided loss Trinity has suffered since 2007, when the Trojans dropped a non-district game 30-3 to Odessa Permian.

More surprising and notable results from the first Friday games of the 2017 season:

▪  Aledo entered its game hosting Colleyville Heritage favored to win, but the Panthers would have been expected to muster more than one touchdown. They have some of the most highly recruited offensive players in the area, after all.

▪  It wasn’t all fun for the Bearcats, however. Star running back Jase McClellan hurt his wrist.

Kiddos are very excited, their ol’ hard work paid some dividends. Bless ’em, they deserve the positive.

Joshua head coach Mike Burt

on his players earning their first win in over two years

▪  Joshua won for the first time in more than two years. The last victory for the Owls had been in the 2015 season opener, a 21-0 decision against Fort Worth North Side.

“Kiddos are very excited, their ol’ hard work paid some dividends,” Owls coach Mike Burt said after the game. “Bless ’em, they deserve the positive.”

▪  Venus head coach John Pease collapsed on the sideline during a game.

▪  Stephenville scored its first three touchdowns in a span of just over 90 seconds early in the first quarter in their victory against Cleburne.

▪  Grant Johnson rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns, all three in the first half, to lead the Mansfield Legacy Broncos to a season-opening victory.

▪  North Crowley quarterback Caleb Leake had six touchdowns, including four passing to Louisiana-Monroe commit Julian Jones, to hold off The Colony.
