Freezing fog developed across parts of North Texas Wednesday morning, adding a crust to lingering ice from a weekend storm that refroze on roads and caused crashes on major highways.

Grapevine police officers responded to an 18-wheeler crash that resulted in the full shutdown of Texas 114 eastbound, police wrote in a social media post about 5 a.m.

Because of the icy conditions, the tractor-trailer driver lost control and struck a barrier. While officers were on scene, a second tractor-trailer crashed behind them. No injuries were reported, but 114 was closed and traffic was being diverted to Texas 121 south and Texas 360 south. The highway has since reopened.

“Our officers tell us the roads are much worse overnight and this morning than they have been so far,” Grapevine police said. “We urge the public to wait until the sun comes up to melt some of the residual ice, before getting on the roads.”

Interstate 30 near Belt Line Road in Grand Prairie was closed for hours after multiple traffic crashes overnight. All lanes have since reopened, but authorities warned that there may still be slick spots. The drivers of a pickup truck and a semi involved in the I-30 crashes were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Temperatures rose steadily above freezing by Wednesday afternoon. Highs in the region will reach the low to mid 40s. Wednesday night, temperatures will drop to the 20s and lower 30s.

Some roads may still be hazardous Thursday, NWS says

Updated 8:40 p.m.

Roads may still be hazardous into Thursday morning’s commute, even after ice melting on Wednesday, officials with the National Weather Service said.

Lingering ice and refreezing will continue to impact some roads through Thursday, according to an updated forecast.

A second round of freezing fog could also affect travel conditions overnight, mainly near and east of Interstate 35, according to the NWS forecast.

Some schools to reopen, some stay closed

Updated 6:30 p.m.

After being closed on Monday and Tuesday because of the storm, many North Texas school districts, including Fort Worth ISD and all Tarrant County districts remained closed on Wednesday. Fort Worth ISD will reopen Thursday, but some districts will stay closed. See the list here.

Some districts have announced plans to add days to the calendar to make up for the snow days.

Texas DPS offices reopen Thursday

Texas Department of Public Safety offices in Flower Mound, Lewisville and Carthage will open at 10 a.m. Thursday. All other DPS offices are returning to normal operating hours across North Texas. Contact your local DPS office regarding rescheduling any canceled appointments.

More cold weather, freezing fog in forecast

Patchy freezing fog is again possible on Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service forecast, mainly for areas along and east of Interstate 35.

Areas to the south and southeast of lakes in the region held “the greatest threat for freezing fog as moisture from the lake condenses, then freezes upon contact,” according to a National Weather Service advisory Wednesday morning.

Sensors across North Texas reported between 1 and 6 miles of visibility early Wednesday, according to the weather service.

“Although the fog may not be dense, it may still lead to light ice accumulations on surfaces adding to the already slick roadways across the region,” according to the advisory.

Below normal temperatures will continue through the next seven days, according to the weather service. No additional precipitation is forecast through the weekend.
