Tuesday Updates: Some North Texas roads improve Tuesday but refreeze overnight

Temperatures in North Texas rose above freezing Tuesday for the first time in several days, but another round of bitterly cold weather is expected this weekend, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth.

Residents saw highs around 40 degrees during the day on Tuesday, but temperatures will dip into the low 20s Tuesday night.

Roads that were icy this morning could begin to improve by this afternoon since the temperature has risen above freezing. But, “anything that melts during the day is going to refreeze at night,” said NWS meteorologist Allison Prater.

Less-used residential streets are likely to be more icy than the main highways. Drivers were still having trouble in traffic late Tuesday morning as Fort Worth police responded to a spike in calls for stranded motorists on roads across the city. There were 18 active calls listed about 10:50 a.m. Twelve of those calls came in after 10 a.m.

Freezing fog that could deposit a light ice accumulation on roads and other surfaces is also in the forecast for Tuesday night, and drivers are urged to use extreme caution during their Wednesday morning commute due to black ice and refrozen roads. Most schools in Tarrant County have announced closures for Wednesday.

TxDOT spokesperson Val Lopez said Tuesday morning that crews are still working around the clock to keep conditions as safe as possible on the roads.

“Major interstates in Tarrant County are flowing well, but we are still urging those who can stay home to do so until temperatures and conditions improve,” Lopez said.

Prater said this trend of warmer temperatures during the day and below-freezing at night is going to continue for the next several days.

Another cold front bringing bitterly cold temperatures is expected to hit the Dallas-Fort Worth area this weekend, and temperatures could plunge into the teens Saturday morning with a potential for wind chill in the single-digits, according to Prater. No precipitation is expected, and temperatures will be back in the 40s by Sunday afternoon.
