A 78-year-old man found unresponsive in a frozen livestock pond at his Colleyville home on Sunday in below-freezing temperatures later died at the hospital, police said.

The man was identified as Barry Alldredge by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Colleyville officers and firefighters responded about 10:30 a.m. Sunday to Alldredge’s home in the 5000 block of Fry Lane, where they found that Alldredge’s wife had fallen in the back pasture and could not get up, Colleyville police said.

While helping his wife, first responders saw that Alldredge was in the pond nearby and transported him to the hospital.

Alldredge was trying to break up ice in the pond so that his livestock could access water when he slipped and hit his head, his son told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV.

Police said Alldredge was taken in critical condition to the emergency room at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Grapevine, where he died Sunday afternoon.

Alldredge was a retired doctor who had worked in Bedford for years, his family said.
