North Texas firefighters rescue woman trying to save dog from icy pond
A woman and a bystander were rescued from an icy pond in Lewisville on Sunday afternoon after they tried to save a dog, but the dog could not be located, officials said.
The initial 911 call came about 3 p.m. as a possible child in the water of a retention pond at 2040 East Texas 121 Business, City of Lewisville spokesperson Matt Martucci said in a statement.
When firefighters responded, they found out that a dog gout out and fell through ice. The dog’s owner went into the water to try and save her dog, Martucci said.
The woman got into the pond in about chest to neck deep water and couldn’t go any further either due to the depth or because the cold water was affecting her, he said.
A bystander also went out in the water to help the woman, according to the statement.
Two firefighters entered the pond and helped the woman come out of the pond. “Due to there being a steep embankment and the icy conditions, crews used ropes and ladders to pull the woman up to the street level,” Martucci said.
The bystander was able to get himself out of the water. Both of them did not suffer any major injuries and were treated for the cold at the scene, he said.
“Crews stayed on scene another 45 minutes, breaking ice and sweeping the pond with tools, but unfortunately they could not locate the dog,” Martucci said.
