More than 1,000 pets up for free adoption this weekend at Fort Worth event
If you’ve been thinking about adding a furry friend to your life but haven’t taken the plunge yet, Fort Worth is making it easy and affordable this weekend.
Fort Worth Animal Care & Control is hosting a Mega Adoption Event at the Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibits Hall, 3401 W. Lancaster Ave., this Saturday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will feature more than a thousand animals for adoption at no cost. Every adoption includes essential services for the pet before you leave, like spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, and more — a package worth more than $300, completely free.
Here’s what to know about the event:
What types of pets will be available?
- Dogs of all ages, sizes and personalities
- Cats and kittens
- Selection of small pets like rabbits or guinea pigs (depending on shelter inventory)
Whether you want a running buddy or a low-maintenance lap companion, there’s a good chance you’ll find your match.
What’s included when I adopt?
In addition to waived fees, each adoption comes with:
- Spay/neuter surgery
- Microchip and registration
- Age-appropriate vaccinations
- A starter bag of pet food
- Post-adoption support from shelter staff
Plus, adopters can spin a prize wheel for items like a DNA/breed ID kit, pet first aid kit, grooming kit, dog food and water bowl set or pet training kit.
How should I prepare for adoption?
- Bring a leash or pet carrier to transport your new pet home safely.
- Set up a safe space at home with bedding, food and water.
- Plan for ongoing costs like food, vet visits and supplies.
- Introduce pets slowly if you already have animals at home.
What else should I consider before adopting?
Fort Worth Animal Care & Control says there’s more to adopting than picking out a cute face. Before you head to the Mega Adoption Event, here are a few extra things to think about:
- Match your lifestyle to your pet. Consider your daily routine, activity level and living space when deciding what type of animal to adopt. Puppies require time, patience and consistent training, while many adult pets already have established personalities and may be calmer.
- Be patient during the adjustment period. A new pet may take days or weeks to fully settle in. Give them space to get comfortable.
- Don’t rush the decision. If you don’t find the right fit right away, that’s okay. Waiting for the perfect match can lead to a better long-term relationship.
- Be realistic about time needs. Some pet breeds and personalities require more daily exercise, attention and mental stimulation than others.
- Commit to training. Whether it’s a young animal learning the ropes or an older pet adjusting to new rules, training builds a stronger bond and helps prevent behavioral problems.
Still unsure if adoption is right for you?
FWACC offers educational presentations, shelter tours, and even a Responsible Pet Ownership Class covering city pet ordinances, the benefits of spay/neuter, bite prevention, and owner responsibilities.
The class is free and may even help dismiss certain citations if arranged through the Fort Worth Municipal Court.
To sign up for a class or tour, call 817-392-1234. Registration for classes must be done in person at the Chuck Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center, located at 4900 Martin St., no later than the day before class.
