That one time when Fort Worth’s July 4 fireworks delivered way too much ‘fire’

Two years ago, July 4th celebrations across Fort Worth really put the “fire” in fireworks.

North Texas was suffering through severe to extreme drought in July 2023, prompting warnings to be careful when lighting up all those sparklers and rockets.

The city of Fort Worth’s annual fireworks show went on as scheduled, with thousands of revelers filling Panther Island Pavilion in downtown. But after a few minutes of big bangs, the fireworks suddenly stopped.

The fireworks ignited dry grass along the banks of Trinity River. The show did not go on — much to the chagrin of anyone who had staked out prime viewing spots hours earlier during sweltering 100-degree heat.

The vendor responsible for the fireworks was overwhelmed with grass fires as they developed at a faster pace than they could put the flames out, city officials said. The fires damaged the tubes used to shoot off the fireworks, so the decision was made to cancel the rest of the event.

Downtown’s show wasn’t the only fire that night.

Fort Worth firefighters responded to more than 200 grass and brush fire calls during that July 4 holiday, up from 17 the year earlier.

While there’s always a risk of accidental fires on July 4, we’re in much better shape this year. None of North Texas is under any drought conditions as of last week. Still, be safe this weekend!
