Fort Worth hits 1 million
Fort Worth is now home to 1 million people, just one of 13 U.S. cities to ever cross the threshold, according to census figures released Thursday. Here’s everything you need to know about Cowtown’s new spot as the 11th largest city in the U.S.

Fort Worth has officially hit a major milestone: 1,008,106 people now call Cowtown home.
That’s according to new census data released Thursday, which estimates Fort Worth’s population as of July 1, 2024.
It marks a staggering increase of nearly 400,000 residents over the last two decades, solidifying Fort Worth as the 11th largest city in the United States and the 13th U.S. city ever to cross the 1 million resident threshold.
Still, while Fort Worth is officially a big city, it’s not that big when you think about it, and not when stacked up against the largest cities in the world.
On the global scale, Fort Worth is still far from the world’s mega-city giants. So, if you’re feeling a bit crowded with all these people, just remember: it could be worse.
How Fort Worth compares globally
Consider that Guangzhou, China tops the list of the world’s most populous cities, with a jaw-dropping 72.7 million residents, more than 70 times the size of Fort Worth. (Just think of all the H-E-Bs you could fit there.)
Here’s how Fort Worth compares to the top 10 most populous cities:
Guangzhou, China – 72.7 million
Tokyo, Japan – 41.6 million
Shanghai, China – 41.2 million
Delhi, India – 35.7 million
Jakarta, Indonesia – 29.5 million
Manila, Philippines – 27.8 million
Mumbai, India – 27.6 million
Mexico City, Mexico – 25.4 million
Seoul, South Korea – 25.2 million
Dhaka, Bangladesh – 23.1 million
So no, we’re not busting at the seams like Tokyo or Mumbai, but Fort Worth is still pulling its weight globally.
We’ve now surpassed global cities like Aachen, Germany and Culiacán, Mexico, each hovering around 1 million people.
We’re also officially bigger than Louisville, Kentucky, Puducherry, India and Fresno, Calif. — all of which just entered the million-resident club, as of 2025.
So, while Fort Worth is the 11th-largest city in the U.S., we’re a far ways off from some of the most populous cities in the world (although it still may “feel like Dallas” sometimes when you’re stuck in North Texas traffic).
