A pickup truck driver who was speeding when he lost control and plowed through an east Fort Worth bus stop, hitting and killing a 68-year-old woman who was waiting, has been sentenced.

In an open plea, Judge Steven Jumes on June 5 sentenced Detavius Hayes to 10 years in prison on collision involving death and 18 years in prison on manslaughter.

Hayes will serve the sentences at the same time. The range of punishment for both offenses is two to 20 years in prison. Hayes pleaded guilty to the offenses in March.

Hayes, 25, must serve nine years before he is eligible for parole consideration.

Inez Caldwell was waiting at the bus stop in the 5500 block of East Lancaster Avenue when Hayes’ pickup hit her on a Saturday afternoon in July 2025.

Caldwell, who had a bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas Wesleyan University, loved Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, her sons, Cordell and Anthony White, have said.

The Fort Worth Police Department also arrested Deovion Alexander in connection with the crash. Alexander was driving another vehicle that was speeding at the same time and location, police said.

Alexander’s indictment on collision involving death is pending in the 485th District Court in Tarrant County.

Neither man stopped at or returned to the scene to render aid to Caldwell after the crash, according to the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office.

After hitting Caldwell, Hayes slammed into a convenience store, police said. Two people near the bus stop suffered minor injuries, police said.
